Well done all, especially Eva. Some really good solving by everyone. I'm really looking forward to meeting more of you in person when we're able to hold our next open competition. In the meantime, I'm working on our annual UKPC competition which will be held in June - more details to be 'officially'...

Re: Monday Evening UKPA puzzle drop-ins

Just seen this post and it sounds like a great idea and hopefully will pick up momentum. I'm extremely busy over these next few weeks, including getting the UKPC organised using different computer this year that I'm still getting used to.

Re: UKPA Masyu Contest 14 May - 19 May 2021

Thanks David for a great competition It was good to be able to solve all successfully in the time (pity I was careless with a couple of the answer keys - one being the 75 pointer!) I'd corrected one error in that but missed the other.

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Mega stupidity on my part - battleships solved correctly - entering solution code and I managed to pick the big outside clue numbers instead of column numbers and domino search managed to enter the number of horizontal dominoes not the contents of them. 52 points wasted - not a huge amount but enoug...

Re: Division C 2020-2021

I’m really excited for this round! I don’t know if some of these variations are original, but I really like the rule of 6 and socially distant minesweeper, as well as the triangle minesweeper rules. Although, I think in the instruction booklet, the socially distant and triangle minesweepers do not ...

Re: Puzzle Ramayan and Sudoku Mahabharat 2021

Well done Sam that was fantastic. Me, on the other hand - one of the first puzzles I submitted showed an error - instead of looking at the submitted key, I checked and double checked the puzzle wasting eons of time, then to realise it was stupid fingers on the key - so corrected. I then wasted time ...

Re: Divisions A and B 2020-2021

S&W Slitherlink - one of the things I find useful with those is to use some sort of notation on cells that must be inside/outside the loop - I lightly shade those inside the loop. I find that helps when looking at ends that can be joined up to make sure that they don't finish up with an inside and o...

Slitherlink - this guide by Bram de Laat is an excellent guide for some of the patterns within Slitherlink.

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Well done everyone - in particular Freddie - that's fantastic. As for me - less said the better - wasted silly points and time with the scrabble and anglers cave - got virtually to the end of the scrabble and couldn't finish it off and had done something wrong with the anglers - only got one of the ...

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Oh no, I hope you have better luck for the puzzle GP. Thanks for the tips! I was wondering, though, what is the no battenburg rule? I see that Feadoor has already explained. This is something that is important to remember in a number of different types of puzzles. YinYang is another one of those wh...

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

All good advice there. I fully intended 'taking part' with the Sudoku round - had a quick look at the instructions and tips here first, then ploughed in. While waiting for the full print, I grabbed the first page, got stuck on a fairly simple one (realised later that I missed the placement of a 4), ...

Re: Division D 2020-21

Daft question but are Minesweeper puzzles like the old Microsoft ones? I had a look in the Puzzle Rules board and couldn’t find any examples in there. I could easily have overlooked them though! :) I have seen two common versions of minesweeper puzzles. The more common (I think) is where you won't ...

I tried to see the file "UKPA Mixed Bag Round -PB 2013.pdf" but downloaded PDf file seemed to be broken. It gave an error message: "Failed to load PDF document." Can someone look into this?
Here it is again. Hopefully, this should be okay.

Re: Division C 2020-2021

Was puzzle 7 super difficult or was that just me? I wasted time on this by not thinking about it properly. As the diagonals couldn't have repeated numbers in them it was worth considering the actual size of the grid as that gave how many different numbers would be in the diagonals. With that bit of...

Re: Division D 2020-21

Thanks - I'm sorry I didn't manage to submit this time. Incidentally, I find it interesting and mentally challenging that blocking out stuff is actually a positive rather than negative aspect to this puzzle. Perhaps I need to think of it and/or mark it in a different way, as I naturally think of th...

Re: Four Winds

I have seen an odd one in competitions that haven't had all cells visited - if it isn't explicitly stated, then there's a simple way of verifying this, though may be a little tedious on a larger puzzle (and a test of your arithmetic) - sum the total of the clues and the number of clue cells and comp...

Re: Some puzzles for your solving pleasure

Thanks for these Sam. I'm very slowly working my way through them. As an aside, for us that are not great at solving Sudoku it would help if the grids were larger to give us more space for having to put candidates in etc. I've finished up copying them to enlarge them out, but a faff. Thanks.
