Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Hmm - an interesting round for sure! The (relatively!) poor showing of Japanese solvers this round perhaps suggests that some of these puzzles might be pushing the idea of culture neutral a little far. For the word puzzles, I thought it was a poor decision to prioritise aesthetic themes over how nic...

Re: Results: 2021 UK Sudoku Championship

Well done David, an impressive performance once again. Thanks also to Sam for organising,I thought you did a really great job with everything. On my side it was (a) a bit of a relief to be sitting out this year, but also (b) really good fun to take part as a competitor. I'm maybe ever so slightly bi...

Re: UKPA Monday evening Zoom drop-ins

In theory yes but I don’t have a free evening any day this week. I’d nominally put down next week as a chance to discuss the UKSC as well, but if you’re happy to discuss sooner Sam then you’d be the perfect person to have on such a call so I’m sure it’d be great value for people to hear your thought...

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Preliminary results for sudoku GP round 6 are out: 32. Sam Cappleman-Lynes 508 41. Mark Goodliffe 457 57. Jeremy Kong 423 Also in the Top 100 were Tom Collyer, Adam Bissett and Calum Mailer I did not enjoy that round at all - repeatedly broke the irregular, and was slow on the scattered after time (...

Re: Classic sudoku speed

Ah only other thing is what I call solving rhythm. Using that last number you placed to naturally move onto the next. The more you can build up that natural rhythm through the puzzle, the quicker you’ll be. For an easy level puzzle and the top solvers, that rhythm basically means you don’t stop writ...

Re: Classic sudoku speed

Some assorted thoughts from me: Most of your placements in the grid are going to be either hidden singles (ie where there’s only one cell left for a number you are looking at) or possibly naked singles (ie where there’s only one possible number left for the cell you are looking at). Hidden is easier...

Re: UKPA Monday evening Zoom drop-ins

I think this is a great idea and would love to join you, unfortunately I'm unavailable tonight. Somewhat perversely I seem to find many of the Sudoku variants easier than the classics - I'm pinning this on the fact that I've watched a lot of brilliant CtC videos on variants and have an idea about h...

Re: UKPA Monday evening Zoom drop-ins

Well I've been sat here for 15 minutes and I don't think anyone has tried to join, so I'm going to call it off for tonight. I'm not free on Monday 21st June for the next puzzle GP unfortunately, but perhaps someone else wants to try hosting - or we could rearrange to later in that week. I think I'll...

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Round 6 of the sudoku GP this weekend. I've enjoyed the last few rounds but going through this IB I think this has the potential to be my least favourite round so far. I guess we'll see. I'm planning on having a debrief on Zoom again next Monday for anyone who is interested!

Re: UKPA Monday evening Zoom drop-ins

Hi - we’re doing them every two weeks for now, following GP rounds, so there wasn’t anything for yesterday I’m afraid. I realise that post isn’t explicitly clear that the GP rounds are every two weeks, so I’ll update. This is a relatively new thing for me to try and manage, so you’ll have to bear wi...

UKPA Monday evening Zoom drop-ins

I will be hosting regular zoom meetings to help bring together anyone interested in discussing puzzle-type stuff in general. The idea is to have them on Monday evenings following a puzzle GP or a sudoku GP round, as going through the puzzles forms a nice point of conversation to start off with. Howe...

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Preliminary results for round 5 of the puzzle GP are out, which again I don't think are going to change (sadly I can't go back and slot in the trivially missing L from the statue park :( ). Here's the top 3 3. Freddie Hand 805 11. Neil Zussman 699 13. James McGowan 694 Sam was also just outside the ...

Re: Monday Evening UKPA puzzle drop-ins

So I've just seen that the Puzzle GP has been extended to Tuesday night - as such I don't think it really makes sense to have the discussion on Monday 24th. I propose Wednesday 26th May for the next drop-ins. As I've said, the puzzle GPs are a good starting point for discussions, but I'm more than h...

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Yeah maybe… I’d roughly guess that at that valuation, it still implies the testers think this is going to be a 30 minute puzzle for a very good level of solver (top 50 at the WPC) - that’s almost unheard of for a competition puzzle. I think that tells me two things: firstly it’s probably a very larg...

Re: UKPA Masyu Contest 14 May - 19 May 2021

My first attempt to set a Masyu contest. Delighted so many took part. Just over 100 competitors, of whom 42 got all the puzzles correct within the time. I was nervous beforehand about possible answer key errors and there were no fewer than 17 puzzlers who submitted answers for all 15 puzzles but ma...

Big pointer double choco! There’s some good practice material here :)

I’m not sure how a 173 point maxi loop found it’s way into this contest, but that’s probably worth highlighting as well

Re: UKPA Masyu Contest 14 May - 17 May 2021

I have seen a certain amount of (unhelpful) online chatter on discord servers: namely Cracking the Cryptic (which I have now left) and Puzzler’s Club. Yes, we are aware there is a problem with new registrations at this moment in time. And yes, we are also aware there’s a problem with old accounts th...

Re: Monday Evening UKPA puzzle drop-ins

David, it’d be great to have you along! I suggested the GPs as a natural focus for the discussions in general, but otherwise the idea is to try and replicate the inevitable post-contest discussions that might happen on site. I’m sure the topics will vary as we go on :) Re your masyu contest - im sur...

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Some provisional results from the sudoku GP, which don’t look like they’ll change: 22. Sam Cappleman-Lynes 621.7 40. Tom Collyer 514 42. Freddie Hand 508 We also had Jeremy Kong in the top 100, and Matthew White just outside. The top times were very speedy, perhaps reflective of a slightly smaller s...

Re: Monday Evening UKPA puzzle drop-ins

It’s easy enough to set up a video meeting :) although I equally appreciate people may already have too many of them in their lives.

Tentative plan is to do these fortnightly after the GPs - although perhaps I can try and do something ad hoc next week for David’s Masyu contest

Re: Monday Evening UKPA puzzle drop-ins

Well, I've no idea if anyone is going to join, but I'll be there at any rate - and having gone through the Sudoku GP yesterday I am definitely interested in discussing further, I've set up a Zoom link for 8pm. I will need to admit you via a waiting room, so please join using a name that you think I'...
