Results: 2021 UK Sudoku Championship

Congratulations to David McNeill, who has won his 6th UK Sudoku Championship, and third in a row. David displayed impressive consistency to finish all 16 of the puzzles in 1 hour and 48 minutes - the same time it took him to do so last year! Tom Collyer also submitted answers to all 16 puzzles but w...

Re: UK Sudoku Championship 2021

1 and 9 are not considered consecutive. The middle box actually contains four distinct shaded groups of two cells each, although I can see how it could be easily misconstrued :) In the contest puzzle itself the regions are clearly distinct from each other, so this sort of mistake shouldn't happen th...

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

The Little Killer didn't need anything quite so contrived - at the sticking point (or at least, what was the main sticking point for me) you can simply ask where 9 goes in column 9.

Re: Classic sudoku speed

And to avoid derailing the thread, here are my thoughts on speed in classic sudoku: There are basically two ways to improve, IMO. Solve lots (thousands) of easy puzzles, which will do two things. Firstly, it will improve your raw speed at the essential skills like being able to see which numbers are...

There's also this puzzle of mine where I think the X-Wing is quite clear, if you'll forgive the superlative introduction to the video: https://youtu.be/gVT786t1Kjk?t=165

Re: Classic sudoku speed

By putting them in rows/columns that are largely filled, typically. I think I did an okay job of it on puzzle 2 of round 2, last year.

Re: UKPA Masyu Contest 14 May - 19 May 2021

Thanks David! The puzzles were fantastic :) I failed to check my printer beforehand and after finally convincing it to join my home network I found that it was actually out of ink (!), so I ended up solving under less-than-ideal circumstances. I really struggled with counting the answer keys on my s...

Thank you for the contest, David! I was beset by printer issues but was able to take part anyway using good old Snipping Tool. Always a pleasure to solve your puzzles.

Re: UKPA Masyu Contest 14 May - 17 May 2021

Thanks, David! Can I confirm that the constraint in No Touch Masyu is only on orthogonally adjacent cells? When I see the phrase "No Touch" in other contexts (for example No Touch Sudoku) it brings to mind a constraint that also includes diagonal touching, so just making sure that isn't the case here.

Has anyone ever met Jeremy Kong? I feel like he's regularly near the top of the UK ratings but I've never met him. Is he on the forum?
Jeremy has an account here and participates in our regular online contests, but is listed under Singapore rather than the UK.

Re: 2021 WPF Sudoku and Puzzle GPs

Ah bad luck Sam, never nice to have a mistake when you think you’ve finished a round :( although looks like you’re in fairly esteemed company with Seungjae and Takuya on the clone puzzle. The most frustrating thing is that I filled the clones correctly, and then made a mistake resolving the last fe...

Re: Divisions A and B 2020-2021

All fair points, but, for PuzzleDuel in particular, in the very limited number of solves I've done, I've found the interface to be so clunky that I've barely ever got to the end of a puzzle without a typographical mistake - not something that is typically a concern with paper solving or typing short...

Re: Divisions A and B 2020-2021

Maybe the very harsh way in which errors are penalised by puzzle duel will discourage more speculative solving In case it changes anyone's views on how our internal competition should be run, I should say that it won't discourage me at all because I only made an account on PuzzleDuel a few days ago...
