UK Puzzle League Division D 2022-23
UK Puzzle League Division D 2022-23
Hi everyone
Here is the schedule for the 2022/23 season
29th/30th October - Beginners Doppelblock
19th/20th November - Beginners Star Battle
10th/11th December - Beginners Hidoku
14th/15th January - Beginners Masyu
18th/19th February - Beginners Nanro
18th/19th March - Beginners Magnets
The first round, in a month or so, will be a round of standard Doppelblock puzzles, the rules and examples for which will be on the Puzzle Rules board this week.
If you are competing in Division D this year, you will need to download and print the puzzles, then time yourself to see how long it takes you to complete each puzzle. If you make a mistake and want to start again, you should not restart the clock.
I hope that competitors will be able to find the time to complete all puzzles over Friday 28th October to Monday 31st October, but if competitors are only able to complete some of the puzzles, this will still allow them to score points towards the Division D standings.
Puzzlers who are not in Division D will also be able to download the puzzles and submit their times (for a separate leaderboard).
Upon completion of the puzzles, you will be asked to email the times and an answer key for each puzzle, but more details for this will be given when the puzzle booklet is ready.
A reminder that anyone interested in taking a place in the UK Puzzle League should email their interest to adam@ukpuzzles.org. New players can join Division D at any time up until Round 1 finishes.

Re: UK Puzzle League Division D 2022-23
Hello
Here is Round 1 of Division D of the 2022-2023 UK Puzzle League.
Please download and print the puzzles. You can complete them in any order at any point between now and Tuesday 1st November.
For each puzzle, remember to time yourself honestly as to how long it takes.
When you are finished all of the puzzles, or as many as you are able to, please email adam@ukpuzzles.org your times for each puzzle and the answer key for each puzzle (to ensure that you have understood how each solution is supposed to look).
If you have not yet signed up for a place in the UK Puzzle League, you may do so in the same email, giving your name and UKPA username. If you are not in Division D, your times will be entered onto an all-comers scoreboard, which will not score points in the UK Puzzle League. If you are in Division D, the solver with the most points will receive 10 credits, the second will receive 9 credits and so on. If two or more solvers score the same number of points, then the fastest total time (spent on completed puzzles) will score the higher number of credits.
If you have any questions, please ask via email (adam@ukpuzzles.org)
Please do not discuss the puzzles in the forum until the competition is declared closed.
Have fun!

Re: UK Puzzle League Division D 2022-23
Good afternoon - there was an error in the printing of Puzzle 10. The row claiming to total 10 should have read 8. I have corrected the original file. Apologies for any frustration caused by this error.
Re: UK Puzzle League Division D 2022-23
Round 1 is now over! It was good to see a lot of new names, and it seemed to be a puzzle type that people did well. Puzzle 10 was much slower than expected with the printing error making the puzzle seem easier than it was when we tested it, so apologies there.
Division D members are coloured in red. All other competitors are in black.
David McNeill - 17m20
Matthew White - 24m44
Jack Lawrence - 28m39
Eva Myers - 31m50
Georgiy Kassabli - 44m37
Paul Smith - 57m42
Emma Kingston - 102m14
Nadia Thompson - 26 points
An impressive start to UK Puzzle League by recent UK WSC representative Jack and new Division D members Georgiy and Emma. Congratulations Georgiy on 10 credits in Round 1.
Round 2 will be Star Battle in a couple of weeks.

For those who downloaded this booklet early on, please note that Puzzle 9 had one extra border and was unsolvable. The v2 download now available has corrected this.
Re: UK Puzzle League Division D 2022-23
Round 2 is now complete!
I found these Star Battles interesting to write. You can't make a particularly small Star Battle, so I tried to focus on keeping the logic relatively accessible. It turns out that a couple of the puzzles were a bit on the harder side, but it looks like people managed to have fun nonetheless. Congratulations to an excellent performance by Georgiy again, including the best time overall for Puzzle 9, though Emma's performance is also noteworthy as her times for the one star puzzles alone would have seen her top the Division. Outside of Division D, Tom set a blistering time, but Jack Lawrence also continues his debut year in the UK Puzzle League impressively.
Tom Collyer - 75 points - 16m53
Jack Lawrence - 75 points - 30m50
Georgiy Kassabli - 75 points - 32m22
Matthew White - 75 points - 34m53
Eva Myers - 75 points - 54m32
Emma Kingston - 57 points - 33m51
Hunter Brennan - 57 points - 92m14
Thales Swanson - 5 points - 6m07
Georgiy is top of the Division so far, but with a variety of puzzles throughout the year, each round is a different proposition.

Round 3 is in a couple of weeks and is a set of Hidoku.

Re: UK Puzzle League Division D 2022-23
That's Round 3 complete!
A quicker set of puzzles this time out, with lots of correct solutions, and a pleasing mix of times so that lots of people got a chance to shine.
The round's best total time was from Jack Lawrence who had relatively modest times on the small puzzles but was a good chunk quicker on some of the larger puzzles. The winning Division D time was from Emma Kingston, who was consistent throughout. Puzzle 1 went to Eva Myers, Puzzle 2 to Hunter Brennan and Puzzle 5 to David Collison as everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Jack Lawrence - 10m48
Emma Kingston - 11m26
Eva Myers - 11m37
Hunter Brennan - 13m07
David Collison 13m43
Thales Swanson - 18m47
Georgiy has now moved into Division C, so another impressive performance from Emma has done her title chances no harm at all as she's now almost a whole round clear of Thales, the only other puzzler to have attempted each other round so far.

Round 4 will be on the weekend of 14th and 15th January and will be a round of Masyu. There is a practice round in the library and a discussion thread already available on the other board from the last time we did Masyu.

Re: UK Puzzle League Division D 2022-23
Round 4 is now finished. It was well reviewed by those who finished them, and all solvers got through the whole set, so worth a look when you'd like some introductory Masyu. Great job to Hunter and Jack!
Jack Lawrence - 6m58
Eva Myers - 9m26
Hunter Brennan - 25m0
Emma Kingston - 29m50
Emma is still clear, but Hunter is showing some good consistency and form.
The table was wrong - check the table in the Puzzle League section of the website for the current table - Emma is on 39, Hunter is on 28.
Round 5 is Nanro, written by Neil Zussman, there's already a guide and last year's Beginners Round to practice with! Enjoy!

Re: UK Puzzle League Division D 2022-23
Round 5 is now complete.
A bit of a quieter round, but those who had a go between them definitely spotted the secrets of this set. It was very close, and each puzzler had a few which just clicked for them and they got significant time advantages on. In the end, Emma edged out Hunter by just over a minute.
Eva Myers - 26m43 (won puzzles 8,11,13)
Emma Kingston - 28m12 (won puzzles 3,4,6,9,10)
Hunter Brennan - 29m29 (won puzzles 1,2,5,7,12)

Emma is this year's Division D champion with a round to go, but I'm sure there will be bragging rights competed for with the final round over 18th/19th March - the puzzles will be Magnets.

Re: UK Puzzle League Division D 2022-23
The 2022-23 season is over! Congratulations to Emma Kingston.
Magnets proved a little trickier than some of the other puzzle types, but as usual, it didn't stop Hunter and Emma having a close run contest.
Eva Myers - 40 points - 21m41
Emma Kingston - 38 points - 40m20
Hunter Brennan - 35 points - 50m59

If you're looking for more puzzles, remember to check out the UK Puzzle League library.
