UKPA Monday evening Zoom drop-ins

Post by detuned »

I will be hosting regular zoom meetings to help bring together anyone interested in discussing puzzle-type stuff in general. The idea is to have them on Monday evenings following a puzzle GP or a sudoku GP round, as going through the puzzles forms a nice point of conversation to start off with. However there is no fixed agenda and I'm happy to discuss whatever it is that people want to discuss. This means we will be having them roughly every two weeks, to start off with at least.

Next meeting: TBC - Wednesday 4th-Friday 6th August

Current instructions: If you are planning on attending future meetings, please could I ask you to add your name to the relevant column in this Google sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0

I will need to admit you via a waiting room, so please join using a name that you think I'll recognise otherwise I won't admit you to the meeting. If in doubt, post a message in this thread!

The details for the meeting are as follows:
Tom Collyer is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Topic: UK Puzzle Association Monday evening drop-ins
Time: This is a recurring meeting Meet anytime

Could I join tonight's meeting? I'd definitely be interested in talking through some of the Puzzle GP puzzles :)

Hi - we’re doing them every two weeks for now, following GP rounds, so there wasn’t anything for yesterday I’m afraid. I realise that post isn’t explicitly clear that the GP rounds are every two weeks, so I’ll update. This is a relatively new thing for me to try and manage, so you’ll have to bear with me through these teething issues!

Quick message to say I intend to go ahead this evening at 8. All welcome, and I’ll try to be a bit more on the ball with the waiting room this time!

I think this is a great idea and would love to join you, unfortunately I'm unavailable tonight.

Somewhat perversely I seem to find many of the Sudoku variants easier than the classics - I'm pinning this on the fact that I've watched a lot of brilliant CtC videos on variants and have an idea about how they work, but I've never really approached Classics before with a view to speed solving them.

Any good ideas of what to watch, to get faster at Classics? Do you generally have a method for tackling them? Or is there just a finely-trained instinct of when to ask which question? (I frequently find that I miss things like "Oh, there's only 1 place a 7 can go in row 4" as I naturally focus on boxes.)

Well I've been sat here for 15 minutes and I don't think anyone has tried to join, so I'm going to call it off for tonight. I'm not free on Monday 21st June for the next puzzle GP unfortunately, but perhaps someone else wants to try hosting - or we could rearrange to later in that week.

I think I'll try and setup a google sheet or something where people can register their interest in advance so I can potentially avoid having to sit here staring at a picture of myself.

Probably not the right place to be answering this in any kind of depth, but if you fancy setting up a new topic in the general discussion forum I'd be happy to share more thoughts. The very quick answer is practice practice practice!

I'll be doing the puzzle GP next week and I would like to discuss it afterwards :) If nobody else wants to host it, I wouldn't mind setting it up.

At the risk of intertwining quite different threads (see Deuteronomy 22:11), it was the contents that fell short of the mark.

David, what a wonderful pun to invoke such an appropriate quote!

Short notice, but is there any interest in having one of these tonight for discussion of the UKSC amongst those who have participated?

In theory yes but I don’t have a free evening any day this week.

I’d nominally put down next week as a chance to discuss the UKSC as well, but if you’re happy to discuss sooner Sam then you’d be the perfect person to have on such a call so I’m sure it’d be great value for people to hear your thoughts. (I’ll comment more on the forum when the contest is over - although safe to say I enjoyed it very much!)

Let's keep things simple and use next week's for both the GP round and the UKSC, whenever in the week it might be

Hi again everyone - it looks like I'm probably going to be struggling for time tomorrow, so I'm going have to delay the start to 8.30pm. Still intend to go ahead though :)

Hi everyone - the last session ended up with no-one showing up, so I thought I'd post another reminder. I'm happy to host another Zoom meeting at 8pm for anyone who wants to discuss the weekend's puzzle GP (or anything else!)

If you are planning to join, please could I ask that you let me know in advance by adding your name to this google sheet so that I have an idea of numbers.
