Results: 2019 UK Sudoku Championship

Post by detuned »

Congratulations to David McNeill, who has claimed a 4th UK Sudoku Championship. David finished all 17 of the puzzles in an impressive time of 1 hour and 45 minutes. Last year's champion, Sam Cappleman-Lynes was narrowly beaten into second place, also finishing the set in 1 hour and 48 minutes. Sam is now qualified for the UK team at the World Sudoku Championships later this year in Germany, but as David is already qualified via his performance at the UK Open earlier this year the last place on the team will be confirmed later.

1. David McNeill - 809 pts
2. Sam Cappleman-Lynes - 789 pts
3. Mark Goodliffe - 601 pts

A full list of UK results can be found here.

The championship was also open to international participation, with a total of 21 participants successfully finishing the set of 17 puzzles. Tantan Dai of China very narrowly emerged as the fastest solver of a highly competitive field. Congratulations Tantan!

1. Tantan Dai (CHN)- 1057 pts
2. Seungjae Kwak (KOR) - 1055 pts
3. Jan Mrozowski (POL) - 1027 pts

The full international results can be found here.

This is the first year by my reckoning where we've had two UK finishers - it doesn't happen all that often and it's a great achievement to pull it off.

In general the level of competition was very high, which is particularly pleasing from a personal perspective - not least because a couple of people have mentioned it may have been a bit harder this year.

Thanks Sam! I hope everyone enjoyed it. 2017 seems like a very long time ago now, but yes that was also a remarkable year!

Simon has also done a video for the Killer
