Post by puzzlemad » Tue 05 Nov, 2013 5:25 pm

Here’s your chance to be part of Puzzler’s EXCLUSIVE DAY at BLETCHLEY PARK ~ home of the codebreakers!

Puzzler would like to invite you to celebrate the Centenary of the Crossword and find out just how the humble crossword puzzle helped win World War II. It was at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire that the future course of World War II was largely determined. With the creation of the world’s first computer, the best brains in Britain fought against huge odds to read encrypted enemy signals. Their success reduced the length of the war by an estimated two years.
Our special event will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 and includes:
• – – – – 11am Introduction
• • – – – Guided Tour including EXCLUSIVE ACCESS to areas not open to the general public
• • • – – Lunch and refreshments
• • • • – The highly regarded cryptic crossword compiler John Halpern offers an insight into how crosswords became so important to Bletchley and explores the origins of the nation’s favourite puzzle
• • • • • Free time to meet the veterans of Bletchley and for a bit of fun, perhaps try your hand at decoding some puzzles!
– • • • • Includes Puzzler goodie bag

I had a most enjoyable day at Bletchley Park. I had been there before, but the benefit of a guided tour of the site brought the whole place alive in a way no normal visit can. The special part of the tour was to one of the original and massive concrete buildings (over 50,000 sq ft with multiple wings off corridors - like a single storey hospital) that is in its original state - replete with strip fluorescent light fittings and bulbs (one of the first installations in the UK) - it was most evocative.

The cryptic crossword session was also most interesting. After the talk (the 100th anniversary is on Dec 21st - http://www.crosswordtournament.com/more/wynne.html) we were encouraged to make the clues for a cryptic crossword between us - John Halpern having generated a Bletchley Park themed grid - aren't automated crossword generators clever - seed a grid with as many words as you can then turn to bytes to help you out.

The UKPA received a nice mention as did the WPF - with Gyorgy Istvan flying in for the day from Hungary.
