Post by JonaS2010 » Thu 22 Aug, 2019 9:46 am

Hi all!

Next weekend, I'm going to run my first puzzle competition, called "Yajilin & Variations"!

The competition takes place over at the Logic Masters Deutschland website, and lasts from 30.8.19 until 2.09.19.
The Instruction Booklet with all further information will be released tomorrow at 10 a.m.

If you have any questions, please post them in this forum thread at LMD: http://forum.logic-masters.de/showthread.php?tid=1716
I hope you enjoy the puzzles!

Jonas

This was a very enjoyable set of puzzles to solve!

There is a mistake on the submission page - both puzzle 6 and puzzle 7 are displayed as Yajilin #6. I only noticed after the contest but it would be good to fix it as it might otherwise cause some confusion.

Thanks Freddie, glad you enjoyed the puzzles! I'll correct the submission page, thank you for telling me.
I would ask you to hide the comment about Unequal lengths #2 in your post above, as I want no one to have any information about the puzzles that is not in the IB, as long as the contest is running :)

Apologies: I have now removed it. I didn't think it would give others an unfair advantage but I understand you not wanting any information to leak out before the contest ends.

Now that the contest has finished, I suppose I can make a few comments about individual puzzles now.

I noticed something about puzzle 20 (the second outside yajilin) while solving after-hours. If you simply ignore the 1 on the top row of clues, you can resolve the 3's either way and the answer key will still be correct (since reflection across the 'y-axis' doesn't change the number of line segments). This wouldn't strike me as an issue with the answer key though, because if you resolved the 3s the wrong way around, you would notice the 1 clue has not been satisfied and simply apply any other answer key backwards.

I've never seen parity being used in a Yajilin puzzle before - it was nice to see it finally being used! This was in (rot13) gur frpbaq ertvbany lnwvyva.

Some of the variations in this contest do allow for neat constructions: I liked the second star battle and there were impressively few clues in the second unequal lengths. The second double Yajilin was simple but very enjoyable to solve. Didn't like the second regional puzzle much in the contest (had to bifurcate in the bottom left) but solving afterwards reveals a fully logical (if rather involved) solve path, and the theme was incredibly impressive.
