2017 Sudoku GP

Post by detuned »

Well round 1 has been and gone, but it's probably worth having a forum thread for this. In an attempt to reinvigorate my blog, I've written up some thoughts here:

http://tcollyer.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/ ... lands.html

Interesting to see Dr Snyder participating again!

Top 3 UK:

47. Tom Collyer (483)
66. Mark Goodliffe (424)
67. Heather Golding (423)

For anyone reading this thread and wondering what the Sudoku GP is, it's a series of 90 minute competitions spread over the year. The format is fairly standardised but the quality of contributors is unparalleled - these puzzles are basically the best Sudoku puzzles in the world and you can solve them for free!

Another write-up: http://tcollyer.blogspot.co.uk/2017/03/ ... ublic.html - I definitely wasn't impressed with the classics for this round.

I'm sure it would have been possible to treat the "Czech" theme in a more varied way.
Using the letters C, Z, E on 10 sudokus and the flag on 1 sudoku seems a bit reducing of what can offer this country...
I would be pleasantly surprised if the mathdoku, fuzzy arrows and lonely number are also linked to the "czech" theme.

Damn. Conceding 100 points to Heather, having just caught her in the last round, was not the plan. I even thought the round had gone OK, but making some sort of mistake on the highest-value classic clearly didn't help. A very fair round, I thought.

Are you keeping score via the official methodology? If so, you've got the safety net of a couple of duff rounds to throw out :)

The 5th round is currently underway. I haven't attempted it yet and obviously don't intend to comment on the actual puzzles while it is underway. However if, like me, you are surprised and confused by the answer to the Unicorn puzzle in the practice paper (because of some 9s attacking other 9s a knight's move away), I suggest that you visit the official forum where I see that the meaning of "different" was clarified earlier this week.

An excellent performance from Mark!

Thanks! I was quite surprised, after finishing a difficult puzzle with 1:30 to go, to find that I'd done all except the Fortress (which I was avoiding). It was weird that it didn't FEEL a much better performance than the previous round where I did relatively poorly. But I was glad, having fallen 79 points behind Heather, to regain 78 of them :D

So with everything else going on this weekend, I forgot to take part in round 6. I'll take part out of time and do a write-up when I get a chance.

I did wonder what had happened to Tom!
I failed to divide 6 by 3 correctly (twice!) and hence Mark has taken the lead on points...

Disappointed not to see an official score for you Tom. Also even more disappointed to transpose 2 digits (and their counterparts) in a 66-pt puzzle that had taken me a long time to complete. Otherwise that would have been 2 rounds in a row with just one puzzle ignored.

It's GP weekend again - perhaps a bit late but you still have til tomorrow evening to compete.

Re last month, the time slipped away from me somewhat that weekend. What with the attacks near London Bridge (10 minutes away from where I live) the whole thing completely slipped my mind.

Results are up - I thought it was a very hard round, measured by how close I thought I was to finishing (not close at all). I also thought it was perhaps a little too "puzzle-y", although not by much.

The UK ranks are a little below the norm for this year, which is a bit disappointing.

Top 3 UK:

56. Tom Collyer (426)
69. Mark Goodliffe (397)
71. Heather Golding (390)

I spent way too long on my first puzzle - knew it hadn't gone particularly well, and was frankly impressed I had not dropped even further. I, too, found it a difficult round (but that might be largely based on that first puzzle).
