I might have enjoyed puzzling, but I was stymied by the fact that I started "in time", while the competition was officially "over" during my two hours for solving. Is it possible to actually state the competition time next time as being "over" two hours earlier than the final submission is allowed? Luckily I only puzzled for a very short time, or I might have graduated from stymied to "miffed"!

The competition finish for UKPA competitions is aimed at midnight between the Monday and Tuesday. The extra two hours on the Tuesday have been added over the last couple of years to enable those who start solving towards midnight on the Monday to still have the full allotted time. I believe that the statement below that is in the instructions is clear.

"The championship will end at 01:55 BST (GMT+1), Tuesday 14th July; as such it is highly recommended that you retrieve the password and start solving before 23:55 BST (GMT+1), Monday 13th July."

Congratulations Heather, excellent score. I am of course cursing the neighbour who rang the door bell and prevented me from entering the solution to the outside sudoku before the time ran out. Those 59 points would have made a big difference. Never mind there is always next year.

Good grief, that is a virtual dead heat for second. I was going to commiserate with Neil and Michael, but as David poignantly points out, there are others who were within one puzzle of that place. But as he also says, very well done Heather! My guess is you didn't waste any time on the vicious Killer which, together with some slow progress on the Palindrome and Secret Code, really screwed up my score.

Yes, congratulations Heather!
And of course to all the nearlys...
I am of course cursing the neighbour who rang the door bell
Fool you, silly boy...
I once left my other half screaming and dealing with a swarm of flying ants in the kitchen for nearly an hour while I finished the USPC one year.
I did suffer somewhat for some time thereafter, but priorities are priorities!

I still can't do the code, killer or palindrome so I'm glad I didn't waste any time on them. Good luck in Bulgaria guys

And on important ones I make sure that the kids have got clear instructions about dealing with the phone, the door, the cat etc. I can normally manage to have a go whilst the other half is asleep - stops him getting under my feet and pestering me.

Well done Heather from me too - and everyone else for that matter. I'm working my way through them slowly in the odd few minutes here and there waiting for kids etc.

Yes, we've all got hard luck stories, David, don't worry! ;) I finished the irregular within a minute or so of the finish, having earlier wasted precious seconds (minutes?) sorting out a printer paper jam...
Anyway, well done Mark (he says through gritted teeth!) and especially well done Heather.
B team anyone? :P

Congratulations everyone, especially Heather who put in a really good score. It's definitely encouraging to see just how tight it was for second place, but I'm sure Mark is absolutely delighted to have just shaded it.

If anyone would like me to discuss any of the puzzles, then please just ask. The Palindrome isn't so bad when you've fully got your head around the gimmick (which is really only an extension of some classic logic!) - and the killer is something I'm really quite pleased with, although it is definitely a little tough to get started.

I really liked the killer once I got into it. Couldn't see how to start the palindrome or secret code, but perhaps a second look will help.

Congratulations Heather and Mark - best wishes to the team, commiserations to the runners up and thanks to the organisers/setters.

Well done Heather, and the very close set of runners-up.

I broke two, including a big one, so I knew I wasn't going to come out of it well.

(I've also got the family trained. On one occasion, I put H to bed, and G was out. When the phone rang, I heard footsteps and a voice saying "Mummy's doing a competition.")

:) Just got back from holiday...

I really enjoyed this one - thanks for the puzzles, Tom! Particularly liked the secret code (some sneaky bits) and killer - though you're right, Mark, I didn't do it in the comp. I looked at it for about 10 seconds and moved on! Did it the other day just before bed and it was very neat, not nearly as evil as at first glance.

Sorry - wasn't meant to be a hard luck story. I'm really pleased to be more competitive this year but delighted Mark and Heather are in the team - their results through the year make them the best options.

Was there an email reminder of this competition? I'm disappointed to have missed out!

You should have received an email about the contest on 21st of June, and a reminder on the 4th of July. If not, check your spam folder! :)

Yes! That's exactly what happened. How frustrating! Thanks, Gareth.

There are a couple of other options too.
- You can subscribe to the RSS feed for the Competitions forum (but you'd have to check it periodically round competition season)
- At the bottom of the front page of http://www.ukpuzzles.org/ there is a facebook link. 'Like' that then updates will appear in your FB feed
But the best was is to make sure you whitelist chairman@ukpuzzles.org on your mail client!
....there's always next year...
