The UK Open Puzzle Championships were held in Manchester from the 28th to 29th April 2012.
The results of the Sudoku championship were as follows:
Despite winning two of the three rounds, Tom Collyer was edged into second place by Neil Zussman, who will now compete in the UK's World Sudoku Championship team this year for the first time. Michael Collins came a close third.
The results of the Puzzle championship were as follows:
Huge congratulations to Neil Zussman for also winning the puzzle tournament. Neil has already qualified for the UK's World Puzzle Championship (WPC) 2012 team by virtue of reaching the final play-off in last year's WPC, so Steve Barge, in an excellent second place position, takes the second awarded place in this year's UK WPC team. It's worth noting that Steve lost a couple of hundred points for omitting to mark in just a single cell in a few puzzles, so the result was very nearly even closer than shown above.
Thank you to everyone who attended the competitions, and congratulations again to all of the winners. Trophies were awarded to the winners, and medals to those finishing in the top three positions of each event.
Meanwhile, in the on-site "Deadly" Killer Sudoku tournament, Tom Collyer was the runaway winner, finishing all of the puzzles with over 20 minutes remaining. No other competitor completed all of the puzzles.
