Re: What is a sudoku? My answer.

I'm happy that you change your mind about the fact that it is possible to define what is a sudoku. For the b. you mention scattered sudoku. I don't see which constraint has been replaced? My main question about your definition is: How do you judge the "but not too many" in your text: "some (but not ...

Re: Wrong Puzzles? [WSC 2011]

I would like to apologize for the overuse of word "ridiculous" in my previous post. There are 2 minimal postulates that I need to take part in this discussion: world sudoku championship should be a sudoku competition. A sudoku competition consists of solving sudoku puzzles. If one of these 2 postula...

Re: Wrong Puzzles? [WSC 2011]

Perhaps 'looks like a sudoku and has at least a semblence of sudoku logic' would be better. Neil, I'm sorry but I've still lot of problems with everything you say: the "looks like" create more problems than it solve, I can't understand the "semblence of sudoku logic", I don't understand why some pe...

Re: Disjoint regions sudoku [new example]

I basically agree with everything that has been said here. Yes the use of colours is a problem. We can discuss about clarity of marking regions (I feel it's hard to make it clear without use of colours, but perhaps not impossible). Feadoor exactly understood what I did, and reconstructed the classic...

Re: Disjoint regions sudoku [new example]

I would refuse to solve it in any contest. This is just a lazy way of adding artificial difficulty to the puzzle and annoying to solve. Even more than using letters instead of numbers without special reasons to do so. Imho things like that are disrespectful to the solver. Just for curiosity, would ...

Re: Wrong Puzzles? [WSC 2011]

Did you solve it? Yes. I assumed it's a classic sudoku and found out, that it has a unique solution. Oops, sorry, this is my fault: I forgot to write the rules :ugeek: . Rules: Draw a single, non-intersecting loop that passes through all cells containing a digit. The loop must go straight through t...

Re: Three different questions?

On 1.1 - I'm not sure we need to get too technical with the definition of regions. The guiding principle should be that the regions are clear and well described, and I think trying to reach a level of abstract generalisations which covers a whole range of the cases isn't necessarily going to add mu...

Re: Three different questions?

Ignoring the fact, that I'd not demand distinct symbols, I can go along with 2.[123] and 3.1. But I think you do in 1.1 through 1.5 a huge effort to avoid bare latin squares. Is this really necessary? I think what makes a latin square to be a sudoku is regions, which ideally cover the whole grid an...

Re: Wrong Puzzles? [WSC 2011]

Neil, Your post could require a very long answer on all points you raised. I'll not comment about the fact that you want to kill the wsc and replace by competitions about different puzzle types. About the first part of your post, I think the best way is to answer with a puzzle. Here it is: neil_sudo...

Re: Star Sudoku

It has the related feature that some rows have only 8 cells (which can be a potential problem, too). I remember having seen this variant (in french magazine, very long time ago) with rule that each 8-cells rows was completed by the touching single cell. The primrose sudoku (this geometry: http://sud...

Disjoint regions sudoku [new example]

Rules: Place a number from 1-9 in each empty cell in the grid such that each row, column and set of cells of same colour contains each number exactly once. disjoint.png It's a kind of disjoint groups sudoku without 3*3 boxes. It can be seen in another way, too; I'll comment more in few days, when so...

Sometimes puzzles are not what they seem to be. For example in round 6 of WSC 2016, an extra-regions was presented as killer sudoku, a windoku as renban sudoku, a diagonal sudoku as pointing different, etc... that's due to the meeting of variant rules on some points (a 9 cells killer cage is an extr...

Why do you say it's not wishable to give clear border? [...] no repeated digits, no blank cells in solution, regions of size N where N is the number of distinct symblos to be placed, etc... [...] I first of all I said, it's not possible. But if you think it is, can you just define it, like you thin...

Re: READ ME FIRST: What is a Sudoku Committee

I think it is now a good occasion to enlarge the discussion about sudoku puzzles at WPC, too. I haven't anything to say about it directly, but I've some thoughts related: I think both arguments can be valid: "WSC puzzles (Sudoku puzzles) should be removed from WPC, because we don't want too much ove...

"Or the 2011 WSC round 12, which consist of a real cube (not a 3D representation on a 2D paper)." Re: 3D-Sudoku (German Sudoku Championship 2006)

I'm not sure I agree. The rules describe those constraints as planes, and to me they feel much more like "regions" than they do rows or columns, and I think RealShaggy's point starts to capture why. Ah sorry, I didn't get what you said before. I understand now. For this case, I would be interested ...
