Re: Can't solve my own puzzle!

Haven't got a printout of the puzzle to hand to check it out properly, but all things considered the chances of 42 being a typo for 24 seem very high.

Re: Can't solve my own puzzle!

Fairly stuck so far, probably at the same point you're at, but it strikes me that there might a toehold in the top-right corner. I reckon 1/7/10/11/12/13 all place trivially elsewhere, leaving 6/14 accordingly unavailable, which leaves it pretty tightly constrained for finding a triple to fulfil the...

Re: Reflections on the croco-puzzle ladder?

S'okay. I'm a bit sensitive after some sub-par performances recently... must start doing my crocs when I'm actually awake. Me too, actually. Horrible FVS just now - I don't think it's giving away much of the plot to remark that I *should*, by now, be able to fulfil a single-digit clue (edited to co...

Re: Reflections on the croco-puzzle ladder?

I think we're also in a position with our current lineup where detuned and kiwijam are measurably the best two players on the ladder (no offence to drsteve and ronaldx who are very capable of upsetting the applecart, and a few others - me, for one - who could beat the formbook in an unusually lucky...

Re: Reflections on the croco-puzzle ladder?

You ask for preferences, Chris, so I'll provide some! I'm rather enthusiastic about the three-person matchups, for several reasons - first and foremost that it seems very effective at mixing up the player list week-on-week. Admittedly, it would still hit a dynamic equilibrium in a theoretical situat...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

...Berni, how did the puzzle start without me ever having clicked 'Start' ?!? Does the time always count from clicking 'Initialise' ? I'm not Berni, but I know this one. :D If you click Initialise and then solve the puzzle without ever leaving the applet , then your time is counted from when you cl...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Congrats to Tom on another successful defence, I think! Might have taken it into a 6th day if not for severe treacly computer syndrome on yesterday's Hashi, but once I saw today's times to beat I knew the game was up for this week. :-)

...and perhaps the championship match, this time, will be less affected by Nick's Internet outages and maybe even as competitive as Nick's match last week. Touching wood, it should be game on for a full five-day match. I've got bored of waiting for engineers to do Whatever Clever Stuff They Do and ...

New puzzle type, I think, as this weeks Preisraetsel... STATIONS: Draw a closed circuit in the grid. The path will connect the centres of adjacent cells, and run only horizontally and vertically. It must cross itself only in the marked locations, and use every other cell exactly once. The railway st...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Well, my apologies to Tom and Chris that this week's Championship Match turned out to be a bit uncompetitive! Basically, my ADSL went PHHHT at about 0:30 on Monday morning - that was the precise noise it made - and it's still in PHHHT mode now, more than 4 days later. I've had to borrow my brother's...

Re: UKPA Puzzle Cruise (18-19 June 2011)

I think the monthly LMI Sudokus are normally pitched to include the final Sunday of the month, aren't they? If so, 18-19 June looks like a safe bet for the Puzzle Cruise - and, of course, it can always be deferred if a high priority contest does end up being held that weekend.

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

As a matter of interest Chris, if and when a 10th person joins the ladder. will you have a two-person waiting list or will you add a #3 contender match to the fixture roster so that everyone gets to play?

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

On the other hand, I have a suspicion Nick once racked up a legitimate three-hour solve (possibly on another Inequalities sudoku? Not sure...) According to my statistics page, I've had two solves in the 2-4 hour range. From memory, one of them was a Dominoraetsel where I took a half hour break for ...

Re: croco-puzzle

Seems like the Hashi was out to get nearly everyone today in various ways - my PC decided to turn into unresponsive treacle, probably due to a background app playing silly beggars. Astonished that it looks like I'll still come out ahead on the day. David - you're quite lucky in a way. The day I disc...

I should add that I believe oenomel completed the Killer second, giving us a UK 1-2 ;) I thought I only made it over the line in a measly third, but maybe there were only a couple of seconds in it ! :D Pretty good UK performance all round on the Killer, I thought. I have a feeling that Rundweg would have been more manageable if I could solve the puzzle of how to make the applet bigger. I know how to do it in theory, but making it happen in practice is still eluding me! Go to Benutzerkonto , search for "Appletabmessungen:", type in the prefered sizes (width x...

note to self: Always check the high score table before starting. Then you know how much time you need to allocate. Or if, indeed, you might have time to do it at all... Not enough hours in the day to risk that Rundweg... I have a feeling that Rundweg would have been more manageable if I could solve...

I'm glad I didn't attempt the large Pentapa with the clock running, and even more glad that I DID afterwards. Hope this isn't too spoilerish, but the starting point was beautifully unexpected!

Re: Tapa

The problem with using the word 'surrounded', as I discovered in an interesting discussion back in my TP days, is that the edge and corner squares are not surrounded! I can't remember the precise circumstances where it cropped up, but it's one that has potential to confuse. Better to avoid!
