UK Open Sudoku and Puzzle Championship

Just wanted to put a quick post thanking Gareth, Mike and Liane for organising an excellent weeked of puzzling. Loads of fun (Premier Inn air-conditioning notwithstaning!) Thanks also for Chris Dickson for a quite different puzzling experience on Saturday - lots of fun and irritation at the same tim...

Re: Online UK Open Championships 28th April to 6th May

Have studied the Sudoku instruction booklet. Lovely production with good variety of puzzles. Several of the examples are seriously hard, even in the sprint round. Hoping for gentler fare in the real thing. I quite agree - as this is the first competitive sudoku championship for me, am seriously con...

Re: UK Open Sudoku Championship Instruction Book

A quick note - there is a typo in the example for puzzle 2:5. A tree, R2C1, is missing from the puzzle but is in the solution. Just to clarify, you're referring to the puzzle competition, not the sudoku one. Well spotted - I've updated that graphic in the PDF now. Oops, wrong thread. Sorry! If you ...

Oh, I need a bye for Thursday and Friday - and Saturday if a tie-break is necessary.

Cheers

Excellent - although it might be helpful to have a blank as one of the options for one of the shapes.

Might try it with one of my classes next week.

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Well done Steve, you got some impressive times over the week (including a blistering laser time for your supposed worst puzzle-type) and deserve the top spot. Amusingly I did the Kropki later on and got 1:11, identical to all of drsteve, rodders, and ronaldx. As mentioned recently I am attempting t...

To be fair to James, he didn't do two of the puzzles - odd that he skipped a short one, but it was a tie on what we did. Not that I'm complaining, mind you...

Well, I think that went very well indeed - nice to get back into competitive puzzling after a little break. Now, fingers crossed for typos.

Many thanks for that Berni. Great competition.

Re: croco-puzzle

My "progress" has been painful, forward 2 steps then back 2 steps. Had a complete blank on the recent Filomino. With one area of 4 units still blank, I eliminated the 31, 13 and 4 options, but overlooked the 121 option. Searched for an earlier mistake, couldn't find it, rubbed everything out, came ...

Shame I won't have time for this - Serkan's competitions are always of the highest quality.

Rest assured I'll be trying this one at a later date.

Re: LMI Screen Test #2 — 1-4 November'2011

If you want a good example, and you have access to it, the pdfs of WPC 2006 have one - it's Round Three. You'll have to time yourself, I'm afraid... Ditto, the files for WPC 2007 have a Powerpoint version, which is even better for simulation.

If only I'd read your message before doing the puzzles, Steve, I would have happily skipped my worst puzzle-type too (and avoided the inevitable -4). And as for "everyone's off to Eger", alas I wish it were true... Ditto... It looks like a lovely set of puzzles. Alas, work has to come first for me....

Well, looking at the current High Score Table for today, James can have today's matches for free if he finishes them, as I don't have 45 minutes (minimum) to spend on Croc.

Re: WPC/WSC preparation

In terms of preparation, I always tried to do as many timed old rounds as possible. I also had a look at any past competitions that had a common author with the WPC. In this case, the previous Eger World Championship (2005) would be an excellent place to start. Also, if you have any puzzling habits ...
