Anti-Knight-and-Queen Sudoku [WSC 2013]

Anti-Knight-and-Queen Sudoku [WSC 2013].png Source: 2013 WSC, Beijing. There is no specific reason to use N and Q rather than 8 or 9 beyond being familiar with Chess notation. The constraints are bespoke to certain symbols, rather than applying to all of them. In this respect, it is similar to Star...

This puzzle features cells that belong to only one "generalised rows" (n.b. it doesn't really make sense to talk about rows and columns for this kind of grid), and aren't crosschecked by another.

Re: Three different questions?

Thanks for the post Fred. On 1.1 - I'm not sure we need to get too technical with the definition of regions. The guiding principle should be that the regions are clear and well described, and I think trying to reach a level of abstract generalisations which covers a whole range of the cases isn't ne...

Re: Battleships sudoku [WPF Sudoku GP 2015]

This seems to be in common with Sukaku actually, in that the constructor has given more thought to the rules than a simple hybrid. It's not clear to me whether this moves the solving experience towards or away from Sudoku however, I'd be interested to hear other views here.

Re: Sukaku [WPF Sudoku GP 2015]

It's worth considering the two different elements of the constraint here. I think if numbers placed were allowed to repeat within the rectangles of the resulting divided grid, we have the more straightforward issue of is dividing a grid really something that should be happening in a Sudoku puzzle. D...

Re: Serbian irregular sudoku [WPF Sudoku GP 2015]

This should be thought about in combination with the discussion with surplus and deficit sudoku. In that thread, there was a separation of the concept of having only surplus regions, or only deficit regions - as Fred says, this puzzle combines both of them, with another constraint to control which d...

Very similar to Tetris Sudoku.

Another way of looking at this is that this is very close to an Extra Space Sudoku, except you are also determining exactly where the extra space goes

Note that this example is not to be confused with Battleship Sudoku, which appeared much earlier than this example: https://www.gmpuzzles.com/blog/category/sudoku/battleship-sudoku/ With this example, the outside sums provide another degree of controversy. For this puzzle they helped more with the p...

Re: Puzzle decorations

I'm not sure I understand the question fully - as I don't think what you are describing is much of an issue. As far as I can tell, you are concerned about people being confused by rules which are redundant to solving the puzzle. But as far as I can tell, it's only on very rare occasions that a puzzl...

Re: READ ME FIRST: What is a Sudoku Committee

Hi Nikola, thanks for your thoughts. As I've said in another post, there are a certain number of puzzle solvers who don't really like Sudoku, and given the existence of a WSC, complain that anything about anything that remotely looks like Sudoku in the WPC is overkill and belongs in the WSC instead....

Re: Three different questions?

Maybe we need a separate topic for Isometric Sudoku (or Penrose Sudoku and so on). They may look like 3D puzzles, but there is absolutely no need to consider them in anything other than 2 dimensions. That round in Eger in 2011 could very easily have been conceived using 3 flat hexagonal pieces of ca...

Re: 3D-Sudoku (German Sudoku Championship 2006)

Maybe one way of looking at it is that, usually, when you take the intersection of one row/column with another row/column, then you end up with at most one cell. This breaks down slightly when we consider things like Parquet and Sudokurve, as you've mentioned. Something new to think about then!

Re: 3D-Sudoku (German Sudoku Championship 2006)

I'm not sure I agree. The rules describe those constraints as planes, and to me they feel much more like "regions" than they do rows or columns, and I think RealShaggy's point starts to capture why.

Re: 3D-Sudoku (German Sudoku Championship 2006)

Yes that's a nice way of thinking about it. I'm admittedly a little tired right now, but my initial thought was that you don't really have rows and columns in this puzzle in the same way as what we are normally used to. Another way of looking at it is that rows/columns usually intersect several diff...

(b) is an interesting point - I suppose Arabic numerals are more common place than the Latin alphabet, but ultimately they are still a choice of symbol which some people will not use as their first choice. Would you object to 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 on the same grounds - and if so why not?

Yes I agree this is what we should do, and I think this is what Tom will do. If I understand, he wanted to start with discussions concerning examples to have a better idea when it comes to speaking about properties (not sure if it will succeed). But yes, normally it should be the opposite way: to d...

My thoughts so far: (a) Which variation is considered a valid sudoku variation? I don't think this question makes sense as stated in terms of something being valid or not. I'll try and expand upon this a little more however in terms of what I've heard so far. I have a lot of time for Thomas's sugges...
