Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

Even the correct answer to another row is no guarantee the whole puzzle was solved correctly - some rows can be filled in much earlier than others which is why the chosen answer keys are the ones that they are and basically why I agree with Wei hwa that you don't have any grounds to appeal unless yo...

Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

Nope, the appeal was unsuccessful. Rather harsh, I thought - spend the time solving the puzzle correctly (as is clear from entering one correct row and then choosing the wrong row to enter) only to be told that entering the correct answer key is part of solving the puzzle. When it is clear that the...

Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

Personally felt a bit rusty (particularly after apparently failing to submit an 83 point battleships, and, er a 10 point recto  ), but overall a good UK showing. Very well done Heather on B, it's a shame you couldn't get the last puzzle out in those 12 minutes you had in the end. I'd argue the...

Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

I haven't had time to make any comment to anyone about this, but this whole division structure is a bit confusing - I'm going to mention the puzzle GP at work tomorrow but I don't think I'm particularly optimistic of getting any takers. I think I'd rather have seen the WPF have completely separate c...

Re: 2017 Sudoku GP

For anyone reading this thread and wondering what the Sudoku GP is, it's a series of 90 minute competitions spread over the year. The format is fairly standardised but the quality of contributors is unparalleled - these puzzles are basically the best Sudoku puzzles in the world and you can solve the...

2017 Sudoku GP

Well round 1 has been and gone, but it's probably worth having a forum thread for this. In an attempt to reinvigorate my blog, I've written up some thoughts here: http://tcollyer.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/2017-sudoku-gp-round-1-netherlands.html Interesting to see Dr Snyder participating again! Top 3 UK...

Re: Trinity College Cambridge online puzzle hunt next week

Looks interesting.

If it's anything like SUMS/MUMS/CISRA then I won't have time to fully commit, but I'd happy to pitch in during the evenings. If we do have a UKPA presence then it would be good to do a write up on the forums or a blog or something to draw people in.

Re: Comparing the difficulty of the UKPC from year to year

Interesting analysis. Putting the UKPC itself aside for a moment, I think the overall difficulty of puzzle competitions has tended to go up with time due to the narrow set of people who keep playing requiring ever tougher puzzles. I think the puzzles tend to be more variants of variants, or crossov...

Re: UKSC Results and 2016 UK WSC Team

There was only one contributor this year  But I'd definitely like to reiterate thanks to the testers who came together at very short notice to help ensure everything ran smoothly! Really impressive to see Heather finish all the puzzles within 2 hours. A really well deserved victory, with a clos...

I don't see a difference in the two links - but in any case you start the contest from the 2nd link so that's the one to pay attention to!

Re: UK Sudoku Championship 2016 / WSC Qualification

A quick addendum to the instructions:

As per previous years, a partial bonus of 2 points per minute saved will be applied to any solver with 15/16 correct solutions. Solvers who correctly submit 16/16 will still receive 6 points per minute.

Re: Amarang Hello

Hi and welcome :)

I'd say logic puzzles are definitely more our thing around here, but there are one or two handy crossword solvers in our ranks and one or two have been on countdown as well. I'm sure we'd enjoy a good anagram on the side!

Hi and welcome :) - is that Chris Dickson's exitgames.co.uk blog? There are so many different variations of things that even after many years it can often feel a bit overwhelming. But do stick around and there are plenty of people here who are more than happy to explain how things work. Do give the ...

Re: UK Sudoku Championship 2016 / WSC Qualification

The printing thing is weird - I suspect it's because your printer wants to make grey as a mixture of colours (which is my mistake) and is maybe running low on one of them?
