Re: LMI December Sudoku Test - X'mas Special

I am slightly scared to see hitherto unknown (?) Chinese solvers atop the leaderboard. There are an awful lot of very smart, highly motivated Chinese out there and I wouldn't be surprised to see an extremely competitive Chinese team before much longer. Case in point: this year's World Memory Champio...

Re: Forsmarts 8th Anniversary 18th December 4pm

Interesting to see the name Neil Zussman from Halifax listed as a UK participant, which is not a name I recognise. A quick webstalk suggests that he was (and may still be) a MMath student at Warwick. Tom, you warwick.ac.uk person, would you know him? *waves to Neil if he's reading, hopes he joins in...

Re: croco-puzzle

Congratulations to Nick for being awarded 20th kyu!

I don't propose to do this for everyone on every grade as that would get boring, but 20th kyu is a big one. :-)

Re: Gokigen / Slalom puzzles

Great link! I enjoyed those, and I am pretty sure I have worked out some general principles, which may well be pretty rudimentary, but punch above their weight. Two 3s orthogonally adjacent to each other must have spokes coming into them from the opposite direction, i. e. o o becomes >o o<. A 1 repr...

Re: croco-puzzle

Rough and ready translation, quite possibly inaccurate, to the rules of today's new prize puzzle, Slalom: place a diagonal stroke one way or the other across each square in the grid so that (a) each numbered intersection has the appropriate number of strokes leading to it and (b) there are no closed...

Re: croco-puzzle

Another way to know that the password change request is genuine is that something very similar is mentioned on the latest news page . I am using the Chrome browser a great deal these days, which has an automatic translation feature - though it can only translate text written as part of web pages, ra...

Re: croco-puzzle

Well, I was going to come and congratulate Alan if Ronald hadn't done it... :) The weird thing is that, looking at Alan's graph he has a 200-day rolling average of 103, but doesn't seem to have had the 20th kyu, er, wrapped around him yet. Is there more to earning titles than meets the eye, or is it...

Re: croco-puzzle

Can I beg your assistance with yesterday's Doppelstern, please? I did get it eventually, but through a lot of trial and error (not nearly two hours' worth - there was a gap of an hour or so to shovel the snow!) and may well have missed a crucial logical step fairly on. doppelstern.png The picture sh...

Thanks, team. I got through it at about the third attempt with a festival of fehlversuchen, but at least I got through it. Much appreciated and probably good material to be spun off into a thread about the puzzle type on the appropriate other board,

Re: croco-puzzle

Can anyone give pointers to getting started with Laser puzzles, please? (No pun intended.) I can't even get started with the puzzle type (not trying on today's U-ratsel, trying the 7x7 weekly prize puzzle from the start of the year) and the usual sources - or, at least, the usual English-language so...

This is all very cool, especially: He also told me that the Turkish Police Academy were sending 8 students to take part in the competition, all paid for by the Academy (they have someone who is keen on puzzles who works there). ! What time does the 24 hours run from and until? How does everyone cope...

Re: LMI Puzzle Ratings

Letting a hundred ratings charts blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend is the policy for promoting progress in puzzles and sudoku and a flourishing UKPA culture in our land. At the very least, I'm glad that there isn't one single global puzzle ranking list, and that people can be #17 in t...

Re: 11th 24-Hour Puzzle Championship (Budapest, 26-28 Nov)

Well done indeed, Liane!

I'd love to hear more about the event itself, if you get the chance to share it with us, not least how easy it would be to participate with relatively little knowledge of non-English languages, and what the cameraderie between the participants was like.

Daily Telegraph puzzle magazine

The Daily Telegraph (for non-UK readers: a serious and well-respected, but right-wing, newspaper) are launching their own montly puzzle magazine, with the first issue being published on Thursday 18th. There was a eight-page sample with the newspaper on Saturday; mostly crosswords and some other word...

Re: croco-puzzle

Congratulations to Stefano for being awarded his 9k title! Emphasising that the grading scheme refers to accomplishment rather than ability, noting the tremendous potential of solvers like misko, I think there are three big promotions in grading schemes of this type. 1st dan is a huge one, obviously...

Re: croco-puzzle

 I think the Pyramide puzzle format is pretty high-variance; there aren't so many entries you can logically deduce before you have to start bifurcating, and an early bifurcation that turns out to be correct can lead to a very good time. It would be interesting to measure the degree of correlat...

Some of the applets are better-suited to their puzzles than those at jank...
