Re: Beijing International Sudoku Tournament May 19-22

Exciting news, though I'd be more excited by a Chinese bid to host the WPC and/or WSC rather than to host its own event. How confident are we that the advertised prizes will actually be distributed, and from what do you draw such confidence? Let me emphasise that I would ask such a question whoever ...

Re: croco-puzzle

OK, I'm leaving today's Doppelstern unfinished, which is very annoying. It has defeated me after spending rather too long on it. Tomorrow, please could someone post a logical walkthrough of it? I think it requires some sorts of logical step that I don't know how to do. I can identify about ten squar...

Re: croco-puzzle

I'll say that the first results you get from searching for "kirarin" seem to be related to a Japanese manga, of which an anime was made. I'm hoping that the nom hides known (one-time and still-current?) anime fan, and four-time World Puzzle Champion, Wei-Hwa Huang, mostly because it would be delight...

Re: croco-puzzle

Have people yet discerned the identity of this new solver kirarin who has been putting in sparkling performances recently? Two top-6 performances (so far!) today, a first and a second on Thursday and plenty of other top 20 performances dotted around the place. It's not a name on the LMI puzzle ranki...

It's more than a little cheeky to post this, but it was briefly true.

I wish I could have been there. Please take lots of photos and make lots of posts about what happened for the benefit of those of us who couldn't attend!

Re: croco-puzzle

First answer: The five-minute penalty is only for the daily topscorer list. When calculating the median and the daily rating a flexible time penalty is taken. This time penalty is exactly the median of all solvers who didn't need Fehlversuche. After this penalty is added to the individual times the...

Re: croco-puzzle

you are assigned a "virtual" score between 0 (not solved/worst time) and 3000 (best time) with 1500 being at the median of all participants. OK, there's something here I'm not quite clear on and would appreciate an explanation, please. When the median time is calculated, for the purpose of setting ...

Those look interesting and creative, Andrey; thank you for the contest. I doubt I'll be taking part as I have a cold and will be going back to bed shortly, but still thank you for making it.

Re: croco-puzzle

Huh, I'm pretty sure that I'll wind up with two >1500 performances today. That's not a huge achievement in the scheme of things, but unless I miss my guess, it's a first for me. Hurrah! I wonder if it would be interesting (well, to begin with, I'll start with practically possible) to try to declare ...

Re: PuzzleFountain PDF monthly competition - january 2011

It's definitely getting harder and harder - notably, uvo only solved 23 out of 25 this time. :-) At less rarified levels, I'm finding it harder over time; only four puzzles right within 90 minutes this time, compared to five and six in previous weeks. (Aargh, I half-solved a fifth and forgot about i...

Re: PuzzleFountain PDF monthly competition - january 2011

Either the puzzles are getting harder or I'm getting worse at them; ten correct in the second contest, six last week, only five this week. Grr. I could have sworn that my answers for the Pills and Slalom puzzles were correct, but apparently not. Never mind. (The latter is quite plausible; I spent we...

Re: +Z Puzzle - New Solving Site

I rather like this. The "Easy" puzzles definitely live up to the billing, which is certainly a good thing in my book, though elegance marks are cashed in for honesty marks on those puzzles that admit that more than one solution is possible. I look forward to a slightly more in-depth attack on the ha...

Re: 1st UK Puzzlers Convention. Sat 19 Feb 2011

Sounds great! I have long pondered as to what such an event might contain. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to attend this one, but only due to the cost of travel - no cheap trains, no cheap coaches - unless I can find a ride, or give a ride to someone (or, ideally, some more-than-one) who wou...

Re: Google Goggle Sudoku/Radio Interview

I know it probably wasn't a good idea to mention Tapa as my favourite puzzle type! I think I was expected to choose between the 4 or 5 puzzle types that listeners may have heard of I was solving puzzles in the office over lunch one day and my boss thought that the Tapa that I was solving looked (an...

Re: croco-puzzle

I realise that W places a single horizontal link, E places a double horizontal link, S places a single vertical link and D places a double vertical link. This is a good tip, possibly a better one than you thought, at least for me. I knew about W and E, but not about S and D - and, indeed, always wo...

Re: Puzzle Jackpot - LMI January Puzzle Test on 8th/9th

It looks like the Jackpot scoring system meant that much more was deducted from the 30-point puzzles, relative to their nominal value, than to the 90-point puzzles. I should probably have predicted this coming in. It would probably have been more profitable for me to spend more time on higher-value ...

I went through the Thermometers puzzle in this earlier on today reasonably quickly and reasonably straightforwardly, and accordingly thought that I stood a decent chance against the Thermometers puzzle that cropped up on croco-puzzle tonight.

How wrong I was.

Tried this, and completed it with ten puzzles finished within the 90 minutes, in one of my better performances, and I don't feel I was too far from getting the Skyscrapers finished for an eleventh. Triple glory for the UK contingent today! We have our second 19 kyu, upgrading their cream-coloured belt to a vanilla-coloured one, and a Happy Beltday to DavidMcN who leaves the ranks of the, er, unranked. As do I! It only took me about three and a half months; it only took David about half as long...
