Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

The participant classes were posted yesterday afternoon. There are 14 people who have faithfully solved in the Grands Prix time and time again and have been "promoted" to Class B on the basis of effort rather than achievement. I am one of them. D'oh! (I am, at least, in good company in this...) I've...

Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

In general I would just solve the puzzles that you enjoy the most. Absolutely! I suspect I will fall into class B from having taken part in so many GPs over the years rather than from success, and yet I'm most interested in the Class C puzzles, so will only be taking part unofficially, which feels ...

Trinity College Cambridge online puzzle hunt next week

People from the mathematics and science societies at Trinity College, Cambridge, are launching an online puzzle hunt next week. For those to whom this means something, it very much seems to be in the SUMS/MUMS/mezzacotta style. Expect it to include cultural puzzles, but I'd be surprised if there wer...

Alex Bellos (The Guardian) is hosting a puzzle night

Alex Bellos, who has a fortnightly puzzle column in The Guardian among many other things, is hosting "A Brain-teasing Evening of Puzzles and Problems" at Portland Hall in London on Monday next week. I don't know if Alex knows about our sorts of puzzles, and I don't know whether this might be a good ...

Puzzle e-books for charity donations

You probably know about this already, but just on the off-chance you hadn't heard about it already: Humble Bundle currently have a bundle of puzzle e-books available. Humble Bundle work on a "pay what you want, and you can choose to donate it to a charity of your choice" system; as far as I can tell...

Comparing the difficulty of the UKPC from year to year

I've been playing around with spreadsheets and the conclusions may or may not be of interest. There have been six UK Puzzle Championships to date. Here is a graph comparing anonymised solvers' performances on them: http://exexitgames.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/ukpc-1.png I'm not clear why the ...

Re: Puzzle ideas request

First: congratulations!

Second, you might want to take inspiration from this wonderful proposal by David Spira of the Room Escape Artist review blog. Room escape games in general are full of interesting ideas of disguising numbers, so they may provide you with ideas as well.

Re: GCHQ Christmas puzzle

Some of those puzzles are great and others are... less so. Can an answer to a puzzle of "this puzzle has two possible answers" be as satisfying as a single answer to a puzzle where you are satisfied that it is correct? Similarly, any answer document which has to include a comment "No-one found the f...

At last, a sequel to the long-running Puzzles at the Mind Sports Olympiad in London next Friday thread! The 19th Mind Sports Olympiad is holding an Olympiad Championship in sudoku and kenken solving. They've held similar events for each of the last four years and normally UKPA members do very well a...

I liked it a great deal too, though found it hard work. (In a good way!) Two of my least favourite puzzle styles are slitherlinks and domino puzzles, but I enjoyed the (slightly gimmicky) all-zero slitherlink more than any other one I had done before, and I think the Domino Search puzzle that I solv...

The schedule for this year's MSO is up, though registration opens in April. We're going to need another thread, because this year the puzzles happen on Sunday morning! Specifically: the annual kenken-and-sudoku event will happen from 10:15am until lunchtime on Sunday 30th August, at the JW3 centre i...

Well before you stopped early you were on track to finish much higher up in the middle of the field, so I wouldn't be too concerned! The results are up! With 22 participants, the UK came joint sixth in terms of participation, with five of our stars cracking the top 100 of the global 387 to take part and more close behind, including some names I'm less familiar with but am glad to see. I particularly enjoyed this test for the way ...
