Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

Labelling the vertices of the shape L-R Top-Bot. A B (top tips); C (centre); D E (crossovers); F G H (base). I can see (labelling clockwise round pentagons, with concave vertex marked): 1. ACBGH (N of C) 2. ACBHF (N of C) 3. ACBHG (N of C) 4. ADBGF (N of D) 5. ADBHF (N of D) 6. ADCHF (N of D) 7. AEB...

Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

can some kind soul please explain to me what the reference to counting concave vertices in the Count Me In puzzle solution means? As I see it, there were no convex pentagons in the figure, and there were no pentagons with 2 concave vertices, so 'simply' counting how many pentagons can be made from ...

Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

I'm guessing there is a 25 point cutoff (that being the lowest score shown on the boards, and there's always someone with less, if not negative!) Looking through my records, it appears we managed to whip up zip all interest in the USPC for all that effort! Everyone with >=25 points (except detunedto...

Whe I spoke to Hans Eendebak in November it was alive and well, but my online searches aren't finding it.
It WAS published by Sanoma, but I think they changed publishers a while back.

Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

A totally unrelated question: I want to subscribe for the Logicmasters magazine - does anyone know if this is possible for UK based folk? Which magazine's that? I've got a subscription to the Turkish Akil Oyunlari, but could do with another appropriate magazine, apart from Sudoku Extra, of course T...

Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

By the way, am I right in thinking that the rows for the battleships/skyscrapers part MUST be 122333 in some combination?
No reason for not have a 4 in there is there? You must of course have exactly one 1.

Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

Although the four square puzzle was a bit of a grind. Perhaps I need to get a bit better with "snake" style puzzles as this seems to be the main work in. I did this in 15-20 mins in the comp. There weren't too many ways of getting that length snake in with 14 turns! Some basic placements on the sky...

Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

Grr, back to a 2-digit score. I was 3/4 way through checking Groundhog before the timer ran out. I had B2-E6 as a provisional match, and 2 definites. I entered it assuming it was right (no time to double-check), so 90 for me in the end. I looked at Digitile right after my last post - I turned the 5 ...

Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

Is it okay to discuss the puzzles here now? As we're only accepting "official" scores, I don't see why not? Perhaps an official someone should OK it first though I'd say that was ok. Go ahead and discuss... Unofficial scores may be considered in context by the selection committee at their discretio...

Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

165 is good! I'll give myself 110. After scanning through, I thought I'd be lucky to get over 100! I did 4,5,8,12,13,21 (yes, I got 4-square out - yipee!) LOTS of aborted puzzles :( - battleships, sudoku, hex eqn, mirror, rect maze, Digitile (argh! spent ages on this - anyone get it?), Sukoru (did B...

Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

For puzzle 9, is that a full set of instructions? I presume the path can't cross itself or touch itself, but the example also obeys "the line can't touch itself, even diagonally" and "you must enter every room", but these aren't written as rules so I suppose they don't apply. i don't see an extra s...

Re: 2010 US Puzzle Championships

If you've tried the practice test, I hope you don't feel as thick as I do! Disastrous effort.

I couldn't see how to get into Di-Agony in the USPC test, but Joe DeVincentis shows how it should be done:

Re: Numberlink and Uniqueness

Someone wrote on wiki : "It is considered that a problem is well designed if and only if it has a unique solution and all the cells in the grid are filled with line, although some Number Link designers do not necessarily stipulate this." I think that requiring all the cells to be used adds a constra...

Re: LMI August Sudoku Contest

Ah, I see the 'scores' now - Well done Tom - you did the lot with time to spare! I see that round 1 puzzle 4 only had 66 correct answers submitted. Hardest puzzle after the three of round 5... The completion time of the winner is incredulous! I would never doubt Hideako or Byron's times though. wow!

Re: LMI August Sudoku Contest

Ended up skipping round 1 grid 4 after wasting too much time on it. Also failed to finish the last stage 4 puzzle in time, so I reckon on 270 points for me (over 50%, which is good for me on any timed contest!) It might have been an idea to practice these before launching straight into the contest -...

The UKPA members have now agreed the wording for UK team selection for this year's WPC in Poland: "UK Team selection for the 2010 WPC will be largely based on performance in the 2010 USPC. The top 2 British performers on the live test will be invited to take a place on the UK team. In the event that...

Re: LMI July Puzzle Contest

I ran out of time doing work things (yes, I know it's Sunday), and didn't even start it.
I'll probably wait until I'm on holiday now until I try it...
Not a bad effort though! I see there are some new names near (not at) the top of the pile.
