Re: 2014 WPF Sudoku Grand Prix

Results now up for GP2 at http://gp.worldpuzzle.org/content/official-results-wpf-gp-sudoku-2 . Well done, Tom, with an excellent 510 out of 600 for a top-50 place! A pity that both Neil and David McN were absent - perhaps due to no email reminder - for a good set of puzzles. I was very lucky as: I f...

Re: 2014 WPF Sudoku Grand Prix

Surprisingly, no email reminder this week, I think? Luckily I chose this week to check when the next round would be. I really have to diarise this stuff!

Re: Puzzled Pint in London

I got my first taste of PuzzledPint on Tuesday and it was good fun. Thanks to Dickoon + Mrs D for a warm welcome, and nice to meet your friends too. Many thanks to Dan for an excellently hosted evening with fun puzzles. Best news of the night was that London record of about 40 attendees was smashed ...

Re: 2014 WPF Puzzle Grand Prix

Hats off to James especially. I'm massively relieved to hear this was particularly hard, as, even though I was interrupted and had to stop just after an hour, I had assumed that my 2-puzzle performance was beyond dismal. Perhaps I'll take courage and try again next time, rather than just assume it w...

Re: 2014 WPF Sudoku Grand Prix

Thanks David, Your post is quite chastening for me, as while everything was a nightmare for you, that was almost the perfect experience for me. None of the three puzzles I didn't manage took me less than fifteen minutes when I tried them after the event, and the classics were the smoothest part for ...

Re: Results: UK Sudoku Championship 2013

Heartiest congratulations to David, Michael and Neil. They join Tom to form a very strong UK team for Beijing, which is excellent news. I thought this set of puzzles were high quality and enjoyable - a very good contest organised by Tom and the UKPA, which very sensibly contained relevant variants. ...

Re: [LMI] V2V Sudoku Test - 23rd-15th March

Interesting about the variants. Yes I assumed X was 4 not 1 (though I think it was proved very soon after the assumption) in the 'Greater than X' too. Bad luck about the Thermometers entry glitch - still a good result given the dinner!

[LMI] V2V Sudoku Test - 23rd-15th March

Very interesting test at the weekend, some nice sudoku variants by Richard Stolk. Of course, as usual even some of the standard variants were new to me, but I presume I wasn't disadvantaged on the 'variant variations', which must have been new to all. Congrats to Tom for his usual top-50 and 1st-UK ...

Re: WPF Sudoku GP : Round 3 (23-24 February 2013)

Sadly not, David, owing to a prior engagement (Simon A's stag do for his second wedding, would you believe). A shame that I can never seem to get to this event, though I probably still can't take the time off to attend World tournaments even if I should ever qualify. Great score, by the way (caveats...

Re: WPF Sudoku GP : Round 3 (23-24 February 2013)

Thanks Tom. Brilliantly done yourself. 31st with only 3 puzzles not submitted and no mistakes is a great result, though I know you're accustomed to this level. For me as you say this was a good one, as I hoped it would be when I saw the format, with no real monster (40-pt etc) puzzles. And I was luc...

Re: LMI August Sudoku Test (4th - 6th August, 2012)

Yes, congratulations to David, and also to Tom & Neil in the silver & bronze positions. Very tight at the very top, although as Tom says that might not have been the case if David had not been botanising during one test. I think I am slightly flattered by a fifth place finish, but hope to see some o...

Re: LMI August Sudoku Test (4th - 6th August, 2012)

Had a go last night.

But barely had time to skim the instruction booklet, and then was not helped by the 4-year-old waking up distressed during the test. Apparently he did not consider me shouting "Be quiet, pleeeeease" to be sufficient appropriate parenting.

Re: LMI July Sukoku Test (7 Jul - 9 Jul 2012)

Thanks Alan, I'm very impressed by the performances of all who beat me here, and especially David McN, Neil, Tom and David C (a much more normal result). I didn't even think it had gone that badly for me as a test. Although I did mess up one puzzle apparently (not just a transcription error), my tim...

Re: LMI June Sukoku Test (30 Jun - 2 Jul 2012)

Thanks, Alan. I must admit, I'd be tempted to rank in order of average rather than total score, putting David McN ahead until he fails to participate in another leg... Tom, I suspect we didn't actually complete the same puzzles, as I finally worked out that the scores could combine in quite a lot of...

Re: LMI June Sukoku Test (30 Jun - 2 Jul 2012)

I greatly enjoyed the puzzles I could get to grips with in this competition. It looks from the timings as though I am the only idiot who solves and solves until they notice there's about 5 minutes left, and then frantically tries to finish off and get the solution keys entered in before time runs ou...

Re: The Times National Su Doku Championship

I'll post on Tom's blog tonight hopefully, but for now I'll say that it was good to see so many regular faces in the final - I know Matt was in last year's, and thought maybe Kit was too? I was obviously sad to make an error (very small this time) and miss the prize again, but there we go. HOWEVER, ...

Re: Magoo

Great to hook up with people I've actually met, and quite surprising. Hi to Gareth, David and of course Tom again (yes I was a bit miffed that you could theoretically have guessed a correct GCHQ solution by reading the introductiona nd seeing what letters were used in a single puzzle!). Alan, we cor...

Re: Magoo

Ah, but it turned out that the warning about not needing "integrals" was a little joke. Given that the letters used for numbers in the one maths puzzle were A E G I L N R S T, guess what the final nine-letter word solution to the whole problem was? I reckon you did very well if you got as far as the...

Hi, I'm a pretty varied puzzle solver, with 4 wins in the Times (Cryptic) Crossword Championship to my name, and have also placed 2nd and 3rd in the Times Sudoku Championships. I was recently quite pleased to work my way through the GHCQ Challenge 2011, to find that solving the presented puzzles suc...
