Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

The only puzzle where I always use multi-colors is Sternenhimmel (Starry Night). I quickly mark all the possible star locations in red, then mark which places the stars can't be in black, then delete the red...) I thought it was just me that did that! No, me too. That's a good tip. For comparison, ...

I also was quite amused by the Japanese Sums, obviously handmade and fun to do.
I thought most of croco-puzzle was computer-generated, I suppose that is just the daily puzzles.

Re: croco-puzzle

Is there any logic to solving a Doppel Block puzzle? I've just tried yesterday's 7x7 puzzle (top-clues = 8,6,0,6,0,0,3; left-clues = 8,12,3,0,1,5,0). I put a circle in R2C4 and that was all I could do. Then I tried every combination of black blocks, until 12 minutes later I found the one that fit. I...

Re: Online UK Open Championships 28th April to 6th May

Not sure if you're intending to compare the on-site results with the online results in any way? The time needed for onliners to print out the questions and then calculate, enter and submit the answer keys will add up to a few extra minutes, which might be more noticeable in the speed 30 minute round...

Re: UK Open Puzzle Championship Instruction Book

Often instruction books are full of small and trivial cases, but in this case there are good quality puzzles being used as examples. Which bodes well for the tournament! I particularly enjoyed Star Battle, Hashi, and Paint By 3. Perhaps they were real puzzles that didn't make the final cut? Anyway, ...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Phew, finally made it into the 1st of the Dan levels. Actually surprised I got this far - I was averaging 1900 (Tagesrating) before joining this ladder, but then with regular practise I'm up to around 2250 now. There are some puzzle types which I just can't crack, and some that I'm a bit slower than...

Mm, nice variety and great quality puzzles. Pleasantly surprised, you've got some talent there, I look forward to more.

Don't know how tumblr works, is it possible to enable comments so you can get feedback from the 'public'?

Definitely keen to hear your thoughts on that puzzle. To me it best fit the description of 'marathon' puzzle, I think I lost some time looking for more break-ins rather than grinding across the grid.

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Agreed; sounds reasonable. For completeness, if both players were to want to concede a match against each other, both with the intention to repeatedly concede until they fell off the bottom, then I would consider it a no-score draw and reluctantly select one person at random to move up or down. If ...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Well done Steve, you got some impressive times over the week (including a blistering laser time for your supposed worst puzzle-type) and deserve the top spot. Amusingly I did the Kropki later on and got 1:11, identical to all of drsteve, rodders, and ronaldx. As mentioned recently I am attempting to...

Re: As-easy contest at LMD

Thanks Berni, a great set of puzzles.
Lots of variations on the ABCD theme, and none of them were overly hard so it's possible to get through a few.
Recommended to others if you've got a spare 90 minutes this weekend (and aren't allergic to 'Easy-As' puzzles!).

Re: Merry Christmas

Wow, that is a great puzzle Alison, with a very pleasing solution. (I did it in Paint actually, marked off the dead-ends and at each new colour box, then used the paint-pot to fill it in. Had no idea what to expect until the end.) Nice art skills, and the puzzle was well done too. Merry Xmas!

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

If you haven't started today's Pyramidenraetsel puzzle, and you have no good reason to waste many hours of your life other than for this ladder, please don't. It is mind-numbing, with thousands+ of options to consider. 85% of people are not solving it at all, including some very good puzzlers who ha...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

And I'm going to quietly announce my intention to drop off the list soon (nothing to do with Nick joining I hasten to add!). I want to cut back my croco-puzzling a little in 2012 (I've already started skipping puzzles in recent weeks, but I don't feel this is really in the spirit of the ladder). Alt...

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

No problem Tom, I'm not disappointed when an opponent misses a puzzle. I've also skipped two puzzles this week, so maybe that partially cancels it out? (a puzzle type I'd rather practise unofficially the day after, rather than officially on the day - and also big congratulations on your two blisteri...

Re: Reflections on the croco-puzzle ladder?

Quick idea based on Ronald's post: instead of having a perpetual ladder, should we have ladders that last 3 months or 6 months? After that time we reset/shuffle and start again.

It amuses me that the top three puzzlers in the last couple of weeks all got an identical time on Thursday's puzzle two - and were comfortably beaten by 5 of the other 6 UK times for that puzzle.

Re: Any interest in a UK croco-puzzle ladder?

Great work Alan, I can see this being useful during the week to find out what's going on! One small suggestion is if you can highlight the scores for the week's 4 match-ups, then we can see how each of the matches is progressing. Also a question: does it require a person to update the data (once per...
