Re: Riad Khanmagomedov contest

Thanks guys, yes I'm very chuffed with that result. I left the three optimisers until the final weekend, so didn't think that would be sufficient. By the end I was getting rather frustrated, and vowing never to do optimisers again! Now I'm not so sure... ;) @Stefano: I've posted my method for that S...

Re: Riad Khanmagomedov contest

An extra point to be made is that this is not like a normal LMI competition. The puzzle pdf has no password, so anyone can download it and have a look right now. If you want to submit some answers, there are up to 6 days remaining from now. Otherwise there's no time limit, and no bonus for being fas...

Haha, excellent work! 8-) It was a year ago (early April) that you got agonisingly close to 1200 then dipped away again, so it's been a long fight back. Onwards and upwards, you're over 1250 already! Personally I've found the Liga puzzles drop my rating every second Sunday, not sure why, I know they...

Re: [LMI] Puzzle Marathon - 1st to 10th March

Label rows 1-17, cols are A-Q, segments will be referred to by their top left cell. There are 3 segments entirely within cols O,P,Q, so no other stars can be in those cols. In the 3x3 areas, there must be at least 1 star on each of the top and bottom rows. This means row 4 cols H-M, row 8 cols H-M,...

Re: UK Open Sudoku and Puzzle Tournament 16th - 17th March,

Hi David, Allow me: UKPA Themes Puzzle 1: Can it be confirmed that we only have to enter 6 letters in the grid i.e. TRAFLG? Will clues always be placed next to relevant row/column? Trafalgar Square: You can only enter those 6 letters into any cell. Each answer grid will contain exactly 9 letters, "A...

Well done James - if you continue at this rate, it's a sure podium next time! Haha, thanks Adam, I like your optimism, but I don't think it works like that! I was on holiday, so I did this in a noisy little internet cafe I'd found, with unplugged headphones on. But I'll consider it good practise fo...

Re: Hausigel Contest Series

It's not clear to me from the first puzzle though whether the directions are actually supposed to read "all the cells and only those cells for which that number is maximal...", which is an even stronger statement, and is definitely true of the first puzzle and of the example puzzle. Yes, for each s...

(miles off James mind.. I wonder what he's eating..) (I shouldn't really be telling you, but the secret is called Weet-Bix...) A good turnout from the UK contingent, and some impressive results. Emma and Adam D in particular were flying high, and sounds like that included some difficulties too. Als...

Re: LMI Best of test

@Alan: The instant-marking option is still a rarity among the LMI tests (unfortunately). @Adam: Yes your first step is to divide the puzzles into Yes or No or Maybe. As you get better your No pile will become smaller, but to start with it might contain half the puzzles. One plus about a 'Best Of' te...

Re: LMI Best of test

Thanks guys. Felt a bit rusty too. I had a few half-finished puzzles at the end, and other ones I only got through trial and error. I suppose some authors always have logical paths, while others don't find it so necessary... @Adam: did you claim the puzzle points? They can only say no. I suppose the...

Re: CrocoPuzzle Weihnachtsüberraschung 2012

I wandered over to the German forums to see if there was any help there. Two of them were talking about falling into a 'trap' again and again, before finally figuring it out. So I suspect it's very common.

Re: CrocoPuzzle Weihnachtsüberraschung 2012

Aha. 8-) After much pondering I found the basic assumption that I was getting wrong: Normally two adjacent white circles in kropki must be a sequence of three different numbers like 123 or 876. But this is not the only option if a digit can be repeated in a row... I think highlighters are a big help...

Re: CrocoPuzzle Weihnachtsüberraschung 2012

Hmm, after a few steps I keep reaching the same contradiction when I try solving this:
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
I can't find anywhere in the 11th row for a "6".
So it's possible I've wrongly translated the rules. Has anyone successfully solved it?

Perhaps some of the puzzles will have "Reflexionen nicht erlaubt" with the puzzle size info. Same as ABCD-puzzle has no diagonal touching sometimes.

Mighty fine masyu today Tom, blitzing the field. :D
I notice I've never had a top 3 finish in any of the 1000+ puzzles I've done (a small number of 4ths to 10ths) so I'm slightly jealous of your regular podiums!
