Re: Swiss WPC Qualifier

They are a nice set to do, and some of the less common types are from the UKPC 2012 which might make them more familiar to us.

Thank you Ulrich, a great contest.
I'm having a good couple of weeks... but that leaderboard is still surprising!

Re: UKPA Puzzle Championship 2014

also, i'm quite curious about the pentominos - I've just whizzed through it now in 5-10 minutes, but after the initial break-in I almost exclusively abused uniqueness to get to the (a?) solution. Would anyone care to enlighten me? Without uniqueness? Alright, if you want the hard way. :) Put...

Thanks Neil, your similar effort last year inspired me. I only won by 2 minutes, but that's not the margin you're referring to. ;) One day we'll both 'fire' at the same time :)

Re: UKPA Puzzle Championship 2014

Thanks guys, I'll admit to feeling a big Wow also! I didn't feel blisteringly fast, but managed to avoid any roadbumps. A few of the other top finishers had a submission error, which seriously cut their bonus score. And luckily Nikola ran out of puzzles to do that he hadn't written! :) I actually fo...

#13 appears to have a 2nd valid answer, which affects the 13b key. Or is it, as usual, just me?
You are welcome to email me your alternative solution(s), and then I can tell you if it's just you or not?

Re: Japanese Number Place & Puzzle Championships

There are now English-language instructions as well. http://jppuzzles.com/wp-content/uploads ... 519_en.pdf
Or read the Japanese version for good practise of 'instructionless' types.
It's interesting that there are no standard 'Nikoli' style puzzles this year.

Re: 2014 USPC and USSQ

Last year people not competing for the US team were able to enter this competition later in the day (it's not a great time for the Asian third of the world).
I don't see any mention of that option in the rules this year. Anyone know? Did the 2014 USSQ do that?

Re: UKPA Puzzle Championship 2014

A good looking set of puzzles, thanks to Liane and the authors for preparing this.
Not a big deal, but the hyphens in the answer keys of #20 and #23 have merged, although in other puzzles they stayed separate. We should blame MS Word?

You're very generous Stefano. Stefano was only 1 point behind me in 2nd place, which is an absolutely fantastic result! :D Below us were some big names, most notably Tomoaki Tokunaga in 5th, who is/was the best optimizer in the world . I haven't seen him outside the top 2 before. When I first looked...

Riad Khanmagomedov's April Contest — 4th - 12th April 2014

I just noticed this contest, which starts in 11.5 hours and lasts for a week. The time you take is irrelevant, assuming you enter your answers sometime during the week. Final score is based on which puzzles you solved, and the top places are differentiated by some optimizer puzzles. The puzzles are ...
