Go to the contest page linked at the very top of the thread above, then click 'Open Page' to the right of 'Answer Submission Page'. Then click 'START NOW' to get the password. Your timer will begin at that point.

Extra free puzzles on puzzlemix.com

As a small assistance to help people get through these strange times, I'm adding two extra free puzzles to puzzlemix.com every day for the foreseeable future. The puzzles are a mix of mostly sudoku variants, plus kakuro, nurikabe, slitherlink, hitori, skyscraper, futoshiki, calcudoku and hanjie.

Re: UKPA Hybrid Sudoku Contest

That's a good point - and it's often particularly true for unusual puzzles. Instead of reusing an existing example, the author often won't have time to make the example work really cleanly. Not that I have even looked at the examples for this competition however - so I can't say if that applies here...

Just a reminder not to discuss puzzles from still-open puzzle competitions, even if just to say which you enjoyed - sorry for deleting your post, Freddie. Do post again once the competition closes.

Re: Humble Bundle Puzzles

I never get Humble Bundle email about puzzle stuff either - only games I am not interested in. Seems they don't bother emailing out about that sort of thing.

Not that this helps with your query!

Re: Important: UK Puzzle Championship competition booklet update

The competition is still open - the deadline was extended again from Wednesday to Thursday (i.e. one day more) due to problems with the web server hosting company.

To clarify, you have not (yet) missed it. You can take part until Thursday the 27th of June, so long as you start prior to 9:25pm BST.

This puzzle has the problem that it is not language neutral, and for that reason is not suitable for a WSC.

Fancy writing puzzles for a job?

I'm looking to hire a full-time (or part-time) puzzle author to work at my company, Any Puzzle Media Ltd. The role is based in London, and would require you to be on-site in our office. The puzzles encompass all types, although the majority are word-based rather than WPC-style puzzles. We wrote over...

If you haven't yet booked your place, do please email Liane using the details in the message at the top of this thread. We don't expect to run out of places in the tournament room, but the hotel itself may become fully booked.

Re: UK Puzzle & Sudoku National Championships 2018

1) There is a timer on the page, but don't rely on it because (unless it has been fixed) it is only approximate - use your own stopwatch.

2) It is against the rules to use a calculator for any puzzle, including Killer Sudoku.

Good luck! :)

Re: UKPA Open Sudoku and Puzzle Tournament 2018

the concept of the snake touching itself is more intuitive than talking about shared edges/corners. You say that, but when the snake turns a corner, the two cells either side of the corner are touching diagonally, but it's still allowed! Yes - that's a good point, and a problem with adding unnecess...

Re: UKPA Open Sudoku and Puzzle Tournament 2018

In round 5, Akari Blocks, what is the definition of a 'block'? Is it any contiguous set of black squares? In round 5, Place by Product and Place by Product Repeat, I presume that "the lengths of" is intended to be inserted, to give "Numbers outside the grid give the product of the lengths of the non...

Re: Puzzle GP question

Just to clarify, you did ONLY two rounds in the A competition, but qualified for the A league anyway? I didn't think that was how it was meant to work - if you confirm I will query it at a WPF board meeting. Are you saying you would have won division B otherwise? Also, who specifically did you query...

There should probably be a way of getting to the main site? I think previously the logo did that, but I wouldn't suggest restoring that. How about linking from the text at the top of the page, under 'UK Puzzle Association'?

Re: Puzzle GP question

Anyone have any idea is there is going to ever be an "Official" section B or C result - i.e. discounting the A and the A or B contestants? I believe that rankings tables which exclude those not officially completing in a division should be on the GP site soon. In terms of 'official' winners, there ...

In this (rare?) case account confirmation by the admin would not work either, because there are real people doing the registration. A better way could be that the very first message of a new subscriber needs approval by the admin (phpBB supports that). The problem is that the UKPA mailing list is e...

Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

There should be no lenience on answer keys - it's incredibly unfair once you start giving any credit for wrong keys, as I think anyone who has ever run a tournament would agree. Why should someone who took the time to check be penalised in favour of someone who didn't bother?

Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

I didn't look at the C puzzles, but didn't really spot a massive step up in difficulty between A and B. Apart from being supposed to be easier, the B puzzles are also all meant to be standard types rather than variants. The idea is that you aren't penalized so much for not having a lot of experienc...

Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

You have a separate time limit for each division you choose to do, as Alan says. The reason for the new structure is to make it much easier for new puzzlers to get involved. At the moment most online competitions are set to challenge the very best solvers, with relatively few easy puzzles. Hopefully...
