Team Canada Puzzle Blog

Having received my first 2014 Championship query email from a potential Canadian competitor I came across the following blog which contains a nice account of last year's Championships written mainly by Aaron Chan as well as an ongoing series of interesting handcrafted puzzles. I don't believe that w...

Re: LMI "Fast" contest 1-3 April 2014

Yes, that cheered me up. I found it too hard to get to page two to submit the rest of the answers... but then I was laughing too much. Also, I spent too long looking at the examples in case there was a catch in the real questions. Ah, never mind, when they run it again next year I'll be ready.

Re: 2014 WPC/WSC website now launched!

A big thank you to Alan for creating our championship web site. This evening I had the pleasure of informing the WPF Board that uk2014.org is up and running and that we are now open for business. We look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible to London this summer. (this is my 200th post an...

Re: Puzzler Media Bletchley Park Event Tuesday 3rd December.

I had a most enjoyable day at Bletchley Park. I had been there before, but the benefit of a guided tour of the site brought the whole place alive in a way no normal visit can. The special part of the tour was to one of the original and massive concrete buildings (over 50,000 sq ft with multiple wing...

Re: Puzzled Pint in London

I visited the event last night and was able to drop off flyers to each team together with a spoken overview (discussion in some cases) of the UKPA's activities. There were five tables (four to five people on each team) and the event was organised by Dan. Dan believes that there is massive potential ...

I was going to be in London tomorrow afternoon, and have just arranged something for tomorrow evening that finishes at 7:15pm (and not far away!) - so perfect timing! I will take some of the fliers that Emma produced (thanks).

Re: Classic Tapa Contest 2013 (26th Aug - 29th Sep)

Do you know that you can compare your solutions move by move with up to three others simultaneously! It is an excellent way to see how Sai and MellowMelon (say) compare with each other in terms of solving order (and speed), compared with ourselves... Poetry in Motion. I have also been a bit glib hit...

Re: PuzzleUp 2013 season

I can't see us commenting after six months unless there was a really spectacular puzzle (or two...). I know that we are not allowed to discuss but if we wrote and said that all UK puzzle members would submit no later than two weeks (deadline plus one week to allow for emergencies), then it would be ...

Re: UKPA Puzzle Championship 2013

Really enjoyed it. No errors, and annoyingly a 20 pointer (LITS) that I couldn't get the answer in properly as the time disappeared. Second Dickoon's comments that there was a sense of achievement as puzzles were solvable in fair time (according to their marks) and possible to submit solutions throu...

Re: UK Open Sudoku and Puzzle Tournament 16th - 17th March,

You have mentioned that you want to book a table at the Travel Lodge at the Airport to eat. Have all other competitors booked there to stay? Otherwise, I would have thought that we should eat near the venue: there should be a good choice of eateries in Solihull itself.

Re: UK Open Sudoku and Puzzle Tournament 16th - 17th March,

Or I could fetch you from the most convenient station or even your home if you are contemplating a bike ride - you can't be that far away. I like unusual journeys and will have to check out of my hotel and drive to St. Johns anyway, so it is not a problem I will just be on the road a little earlier.

Re: 5th Serbian Open Optimizing Puzzle Championship

Question 1 I didn't have time to optimise this, but I got as far as recognising the different constraints of the planned routes vs the unplanned routes and the 4,3,4 scenario. My worst score - submitted just to enter - only 104 Question 2 Lots of degrees of freedom on this one. Did the min-max const...
