Re: 1234 Sudoku [WSC 2015]

A definite no for me - not only have you got the repeated numbers having to be placed, there is also something of a Heyawake or Hitori like constraint in terms of packing the 4's and 3's into fairly limited regions.

Re: Ring Sudoku [WSC 2013]

I think it's certainly a very poorly designed variant - the constraints of the geometry mean that it isn't really possible to get anything approaching an interesting solving path...

Re: Puzzle decorations

Is point 1 true? I can't remember enough from my uni days frustratingly! Can't find flaw in points 2-4 though. At the risk of going waaaay off topic, yes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clopen_set. Somewhat trivially, the empty set and the entire space are always both open and closed. In general the...

Re: Dealing with the Media

I can't say that surprises me - I get the impression that there's something of a closed shop within puzzle publishers, particular those which churn out mostly computer generated content (which I think is going to be most puzzles that appear in a newspaper). My approach would be to try and find at le...

Re: Character battle [WPF puzzle GP 2018]

So I'm not sure blank cells is exactly the right way to be thinking about things. At the start of the puzzle everything is blank, but that blankness has the meaning of ambiguity - in the final solution there will either definitely be a star/character/whatever there or definitely not be a star there....

Re: Burodoku [new example]

I tend to agree with Fred and disagree with Neil here. I think as soon the puzzle involves elements which don't involve placing numbers, then we have veered away from Sudoku - even if there are just one or two line segments missing. From that point of view I think we are repeating a discussion we've...

Re: Puzzle decorations

Neil: I very much enjoyed your fumbling around with topological ideas :) I think there is definitely something to be said for defining what a Sudoku is definitely not (or indeed defining some red lines for puzzles that should be appearing at competitions). The difficulty lies in being entirely compr...

Re: Puzzle decorations

My initial reaction to those 3 examples is similar to Neil. The bottom two are definitely not classic sudoku. The fact that they are very similar to classic is due to the fact that the constraints used resolve themselves trivially, leaving the rest of the puzzle as an exercise in filling in the clas...

Re: WPF Sudoku GP

I had a go at this earlier today. I think I'd have been amongst those who got all but the sum-product killer out. The repeating numbers within cages wasn't particularly nice to see. Re the hard classic - making a well placed guess to get going wasn't particularly difficult. I guess it's a matter of ...

General Updates

This thread is to provide general updates from the "What is a Sudoku?" committee. Recently activity in the forum has died down a bit, and this has been in no small part due to myself being very busy at work in January and having taken a holiday to recover at the start of February. I will be posting ...

Round 2 happening this weekend. It looks kind of fruity to me at first glance, so well worth familiarising yourself with the IB before starting. There's also a bunch of corrections in the forum post

Re: What is a sudoku? My answer.

Thanks Berni, I am insanely overworked right now so haven't really had time to think about things over the last week or so - and nor will I likely to be over the next week or so - but I am very glad to see some of the elements we have discussed so far put together in a coherent whole. I'm sure there...

Fred, Could I ask you to tone down your posts a little. If you are going to forensically dissect, line by line, any opinion which is contrary to yours with comments like "this is ridiculous" then you are going to discourage anyone from offering an opinion at all. And we must definitely not discourag...

Re: Disjoint regions sudoku [new example]

So I think this comes down to what we are discussing in another thread. We clearly have rows, columns and regions, but I think it's debatable whether in the original presentation the regions are clearly marked. Liane's point about the use of colour is interesting - yes we have a colour blindness iss...
