Re: 2024 UK Results Thread

Just to add to Adam's post on round 2 of the Sudoku GP - unfortunately this did happen to clash with the UK Open, which looks as if it's affected the UK participation for this round. The top 3 were:

82 Matt Siegfried 463
103 Mark Goodliffe 422
130 Ned Walker 374

Re: 2024 UKPA Open Sudoku and Puzzle Tournament

Have we posted the results and/or the photos from the event yet? Would be good to give ourselves a bit of belated publicity if not :)

Re: 2024 UK Results Thread

Puzzle GP Round 1 - despite the ongoing technical difficulties with the website, it looks like a pretty good showing from the UK based on the preliminary results. Well done especially to both Freddie and Sam who finished the set within time! Top 3 UK: 8 Freddie Hand 789.5 (this rank could go up if o...

Re: 2024 UK Results Thread

Also - Adam do you maintain these rankings anywhere where people can see them? Is it the sort of thing that could go up on a Google sheet for instance?

Re: 2024 UK Results Thread

Well done for setting up a thread Adam! 1000+ people took part in round 1, but alas not me. Probably also worth highlighting that Sam managed to finish the set, which is always a nice achievement.

Top 3 UK:

25 Sam Capppleman-Lynes 613
71 Jack Lawrence 451
106 Matt Siegfried 402

Re: Slash Pack

Couple of things come to mind - I think you need quite good visualisation skills to simultaneously play around with a couple of ideas that might work and go with one. I also think there’s quite a lot of uniqueness you can use to guide the visualisation - some of the solutions for some of the harder ...

Re: Puzzle Duel

Hey Adam, definitely worth a post! For what it’s worth I think there are now a new generation of solvers who are far more intuitive than before - and I suppose you’d have to say it’s not exactly random guesswork if the same people keep doing so well using it (which isn’t to say these people are alwa...

Re: Results of 2023 UK Puzzle Championship

Brief update here - I don't think Josh Bao is from the UK (E.g. he's listed as Singapore on the Puzzle GP rankings, although as USA on the Sudoku GP rankings, which is... weird - or maybe two different people?) Perhaps we need to make sure that the default country during registration is empty, rathe...

Re: Puzzles at the Mind Sports Olympiad in London on Sunday

Congrats David, I was just thinking about this. Great to see a few more competitors - maybe last year was bad luck with the scheduling or something. Yes, as it turned out I was away in Scotland last week with very little prospect of being able to get back to London in time - just the way of things I...

Re: 2023 Puzzle Grand Prix

That one resolves itself reasonably quickly: R1C1 is a 2-snake going right or down. If down then things break quickly: - R3C1 must go right (if down it’d be a 2-snake adjacent to another 2-snake, which is forbidden). Let’s call this A. - similarly R1C2 goes down. Let’s call this B. - A and B don’t j...

Re: 2023 UK Results Thread

With 6 rounds completed, it's worth having a look at the overall standings. No real rhyme or reason to this, but I'll focus on those round about the top 200 as things stand: Puzzle GP: 7 Freddie Hand 4259.1 (note this is 5 rounds worth rather than 6) 22 Neil Zussman 3510.2 25 James McGowan 3402 81 A...

Re: Puzzle Duel Leagues

My original thought that it was an April Fools' seems to have been wide of the mark. I'm interested to see what will happen at the end of the month as it appears that puzzles are 'live' for the normal five days so I'm not quite sure at what point they will confirm any promotion/relegation. It does ...

Re: Puzz.link

Interesting - I suppose whilst people are still posting puzzles on twitter there might be a case to try and crowd-fund a monthly fee given how many people were using it - it might be possible to cover the $100 a month level for example. On the other hand, I wonder if people will stop using twitter t...

Although as I post, I notice that the database seems to have stopped picking up links on Twitter. Does anyone know why?

Re: 2023 UK Results Thread

Adam - re your rankings, would be interesting to see how that compares to the rankings the WPF have been working on. Maybe it's worth a separate thread to try and have a more representative UK ranking overall - my feeling is the most credible such rankings need to reflect offline rankings - so perha...

Re: 2023 UK Results Thread

Preliminary results for Sudoku GP round 4. A few of the usual suspects were involved in setting the puzzles for this round - perhaps as a result the top 3 has spilled out over the (arbitrary) top 100 benchmark

74. Mark Goodliffe 446
85. Calum Mailer 418
124. Matt Siegfried 367

My usual format summary for Puzzle GP round 3:

21. Neil Zussman 592
30. James McGowan 567
69. Matthew White 453

Just behind Matthew was Emma McCaughan, and a little further back floating around position 100 were Jeremy Kong, Adam Bissett and Tom Collyer

Re: Puzzle Duel Leagues

Not sure what I make of it as a system, I suppose it depends on what it’s trying to achieve. 1) first metric being total solved puzzles with no errors obviously penalises those who miss day here and there - and also with mistakes - once you stop from 100% there is no way to recover. I imagine the pr...

Sudoku GP round 3 results - apologies for a bit of a delay!

68 Tom Collyer 451
95 Jack Lawrence 399
102 Jeremy Kong 391

Honourable mentions to Adam Bissett who was very narrowly behind Jeremy, and to Mark Goodliffe who was a bit further back outside the top 100
