Hi Liane - the contest page current states that the contest is 3 hours long - is that correct?

Re: Results: 2022 UK Sudoku Championship

Tough competition this year, but very impressive from both Freddie and Mark - it’s never easy to get the better of David! Thanks also to Sam for organising at short notice, some very nice puzzles in the set. On a personal note Im forced to lick my lockout line wounds. Don’t think I’m the only one th...

Spotted: Celebrity Puzzle Solvers

I suspect we've discussed this before in various places and forms, but I thought it might be an idea to gather all the sightings and media mentions of people into their puzzles. This idea was triggered watching the test match. They've just showed Jonny Bairstow on screen engrossed in a Times book of...

Also worth noting that there seems to be an issue with the initial emails being sent ending up on the wrong side of spam filters. If you see this message, please can I get you to double check whether any messages sent out have ended up in spam folders.

Re: Division A 2021-22

I thought I'd give the final leg a go as a bit of an exception. Was kind of fun, except for the bits involving yajisan-kuzisan (or whatever it is's called). A highly tedious puzzle type in my opinion, I reckon it might be even worse than hitori!

Re: 2022 WPF Puzzle GP

I enjoyed this round a lot more than I’ve enjoyed the sudoku gp rounds this year. I entered cold (without even looking at the IB) and thought all the puzzles were fair and fun to solve - maybe the double spolicy is the exception. Even the kropki was pretty good!

Re: 2022 WPF Puzzle GP

Preliminary round 5 results out:

2. Freddie Hand 983 points
25. James McGowan 572
42. Sam Cappleman-Lynes 503

A few more UK solvers lurking in the top 100, including Tom Collyer, Matthew White, Adam Bissett and Anthony Ford.

Re: 2022 WPF Sudoku GP

Is it just me, or is the Sudoku GP becoming a bit of a slog this year? Certainly not the best set of results we've seen as far as UK solvers go, although credit must go to Jack Lawrence's impressive top 50 performance.

Top 3 UK:

38. Jack Lawrence 465
73. Mark Goodliffe 400
105. Tom Collyer 355

Re: Division A 2021-22

Adam: Puzzle duel publishes a method to go from a list of solving times to a score here. http://www.puzzleduel.club/help All you need is to spend a bit of time getting the median time from the results for each puzzle and you could calculate in a spreadsheet. I tend to think that your method might be...

Re: 2022 WPF Sudoku GP

Round 4 results: 23. Sam Cappleman-Lynes 530 40. Freddie Hand 465 58. Mark Goodliffe 428 Tom Collyer and Jack Lawrence also made the top 100. I found these to be clever puzzles; nice puzzles to solve, but not necessarily against the clock. Then again, I'm feeling slow and way out of touch these days.

Re: Hello from Glasgow!

Hi Lewis, welcome to the forums! Speaking from experience I can certainly say it’s a brave individual who takes on a PhD - good luck! I’m impressed you’ve managed to find beyond sudoku - Gareth will be pleased to hear that I’m sure. Doubly impressed you’ve managed to find Toketa - I’ve only ever sin...

Re: 2022 WPF Sudoku GP

Round 3 results, again with a bit of a delay: 16. Sam Cappleman-Lynes 624.3 54. Tom Collyer 448 58. Jack Lawrence 437 We also had Freddie Hand in the top 100, but otherwise not as much joy in the Sudoku GP for the UK contingent when compared to the Puzzle GP. Well done to Sam for finishing the set! ...

Re: 2022 WPF Puzzle GP

I've slacked a bit on the results service, but I thought I'd try and bring us back up to date for round 2. Top 3 UK were: 2. Freddie Hand 902.3 11. Neil Zussman 748.5 15. James McGowan 716.2 Sam also continues his great showing in the puzzle GP with a 19th place finish. Adam Bissett was a bit furthe...

Re: Division A 2021-22

Hi Adam - I don’t think I’ll be doing the LMI tests this year, for personal reasons. I’m also in two minds about puzzle duel, given the heavy Russian influence. I haven’t been solving the daily puzzles for a bit, and I’m trying to weigh up where I stand on this. On the one hand, the “cancelling” of ...

Re: 2022 WPF Sudoku GP

Round 2 results, with apologies for posting with a delay: 41. Mark Goodliffe 486 47. Calum Mailer 463 53. Tom Collyer 453 A good amount of UK participation, again, although this time with no-one else troubling the top 100. Closest was Jack Lawrence back in 122. I'm not sure if it was just me, but I ...

Results are out: https://tcollyer.blogspot.com/2022/02/results-sudoku-design-competition.html Great to see participation and support from this parish, with entries from Sam and Gareth - with Gareth coming away as a prize winner. Re: 2022 WPF Puzzle GP

Ah so there’s also a forum thread which does shed some light on the delays: https://gp.worldpuzzle.org/comment/10067#comment-10067 To summarise, I think there have been some issues with server going down during competition and Karel has needed to handle the affected entries manually, which has led t...

In case you are still facing any is...

Re: Coloured pencils - fair to use?

As far as colours go, I have blue black and red pens with me generally speaking, and I’ve often found highlighters to be really useful for some shading style puzzles. (I have 4 colours of those) I don’t think that stationery choices offer that much in the way of unfair advantages - certainly not in ...

Re: 2022 WPF Sudoku GP

Preliminary results out from what I thought was a very tough opening round (although that might just have been me being maybe competition rusty and certainly sleep-deprived on Tuesday morning). Top 3 UK: 13. Sam Cappleman-Lynes 573 - this equals the best ever UK placement in a Sudoku GP round, also ...

2022 WPF Sudoku GP

I nearly missed this, but the series has kicked off for another year and round 1 has been happening since last Friday. Note that the deadline has been exceptionally extended by one day so you have until the end of Tuesday to have a go if you haven’t already.
