Re: New "paper puzzle" game - feedback requested!

Don't usually respond to requests like this, but Tom has encouraged me to say something. The Hexanatsu format looks by far the most interesting. How constrained is the set of solutions for a single hexagon? Could we combine hexagons with other polygons to expand the solution space? Why not allow ant...

Re: croco-puzzle

I have just been sent an e-mail congratulating me on becoming a second Dan. Second Dan used to be for a long-term average of over 2200 and I'm nowhere near that. Have the rules changed?

Re: UKPA Open Sudoku and Puzzle Tournament 2017

Thanks Liane. That's much better.

The rules are still unclear to me but my interpretation ensures a unique solution. Let's hope I have it right.

Re: UKPA Open Sudoku and Puzzle Tournament 2017

Struggling a bit with Puzzle Round 2. Will the thermometers in puzzle 3 be in grey? They are currently too dark and obscure the solver's pencil marks. Can we assume in puzzle 4, that every cell will be used? The rules for puzzle 6 are totally unclear. The example has several wrong numbers. As in puz...

Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

Well, I've now had a go at the C puzzles and scored 336! Quite enjoyed it as I tend to like word puzzles and detest Nikoli puzzles. But definitely the timing was way off and likely to be a disincentive for new solvers.

Re: 2017 Puzzle GP

I have had a go at solving the A puzzles and B puzzles. The A puzzles seemed spot on apart from the third Doppelblock which was over the top. The B puzzles were great, although I didn't beat Heather. I haven't had a go at the C puzzles yet. Thinking of this from the puzzle setters' point of view, th...

Re: UK Open Puzzle & Sudoku Tournaments

Mark,

Because the 1 in the bottom row would then actually have 2 orthogonal neighbours. It's puzzle round 3 by the way in case others are wondering.

LMI: Triplets and Triangles Sudoku Contest

Please check out this weekend's Sudoku contest on Logic Masters India. Yours truly has set the (beautiful) puzzles and I have to say a big thank you to Tom, Robert Vollmert and Yuhei Kusui for testing and Deb Mohanty for hosting. Hope you can all find time to give it a go.

Re: LMI - Sudoku Mahabharat & ISC Qualifiers

Congratulations to my three UK team colleagues on beating me soundly in the Maths Variations contest. I hated the two hard puzzles - the large Group Sums and Repeating Neighbours. I could not find a logical solution to either and spent 60 minutes on them. The Group Sums had nice logic until about 60...

Re: LMI - Puzzle Ramayan & IPC Qualifiers : September - Marc

First thing to say is what a phenomenal effort by Hideaki.

Yes. Great showing by the UK. The theme was likely to suit the Sudoku specialists. I spent ages on the ABC skyscrapers. Loved the Kakuro, especially the Kropkuro.

A good warm-up. Now, what's going to appear in that instruction booklet?

Re: 2015 Sudoku GP

Very well done Mark. The Classics were all quite tricky. And some of the later puzzles took time as well.

My submission wasn't logged. I have just heard from Karel to say that my first submission was after the contest had ended!

Re: UK Puzzle Championship 2015

Liane, Thanks for posting the instruction booklet. Looks like an interesting set. I find the grey tabs in Puzzle 13 a bit unsatisfactory. I assume the intention is that the letters in these tabs have the same spacing as in the central grid. It would be nice if these tabs could be subdivided into cel...

Re: 2015 UK Open Sudoku and UK Open Puzzle Tournaments

Liane,

Thanks for posting all these documents. One small query regarding the 0 to 9 puzzle in Round 2 of the Sudoku. In the cells with 2 digits, are we required to place the smaller number above the larger number?

Thank you,

David.

Re: 2015 Puzzle GP

There were some really tough puzzles in this set, some of which had surprisingly low score allocations. I'm not that strong at Nurikabe but I thought those puzzles were all much harder than the points suggested. I wasted a lot of time on the Tents puzzles which were hard to solve logically - rather ...

Any idea when we start on the Saturday? Wondering if I can fly over on the Saturday morning.

Have the hotel offered an overnight rate to us or are people planning to stay elsewhere?

Thank you,

Oh dear. I forgot that initializing started the clock. It must be unprecedented for a U1 puzzle not to previously have appeared as a Preisratsel.

Re: Simple Aptitude Question ( which i cannot solve)

Apologies. I re-read the question and the solution is unique. A Venn diagram will help a lot. You can use a little bit of algebra to get you over the line.
