Re: Puzzle Ramayan - 2020

Round 3 UK results: 10. Freddie Hand - 150.2 27. James McGowan - 140.1 61. Tom Collyer - 118.5 A nice and easy test this round, with 87 finishers in total. Sadly, printer troubles denied me from obtaining a better result (my first submission was at 4:28) but still fairly pleased with my result. Ken ...

Re: Some puzzles for your solving pleasure

Recordings of the league can be found at Ken Endo's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVhOlVD80yMT2r_FWpt6FbA It's essentially a competition where players go head to head against each other in matches (similar to the WSPC playoffs), and a different person creates the puzzles each tim...

Re: Some puzzles for your solving pleasure

Something akin to the Japanese Heads Up puzzle league would be pretty cool, I think.

Re: Some puzzles for your solving pleasure

Thanks for the puzzles Sam! Just started working through them: the second has a very neat break-in.

Since school is closed for the foreseeable future, I may start producing some puzzles again...

Re: Where should a beginner start with puzzles?

I feel that I'm not able to solve anything there yet :? Maybe 12 months it's a bit too much, but I think I need at least some time to get the gripes of solving and feel like I can at least solve half of the puzzles in the given time. Not to mention that I don't know anything about specific techniqu...

Re: Where should a beginner start with puzzles?

Also, since nobody mentioned, I just recently found out about Krazydad's website: https://krazydad.com/ It has a huge amount of puzzles of some different kinds. It looks like a great source as well. Krazydad puzzles certainly aren’t bad. The thing to bear in mind is that they are computer generated...

Preliminary results for round 3: 10.(!) Neil Zussman 654 27. James McGowan 579 43. Freddie Hand 531 Congratulations to Neil on a top ten finish! Only four Japanese solvers to beat now... Re: Where should a beginner start with puzzles?

I can’t recommend a book for puzzle techniques because I don’t think one exists! There are a lot of blogs and Youtubers I can recommend though. In terms of Youtubers, cracking the cryptic is the best for puzzles: although they mostly concentrate on sudoku, they have quite a few puzzle guides as well...

Re: Where should a beginner start with puzzles?

I would highly recommend visiting gmpuzzles.com . They aren't publishing many puzzles at the moment but they have a massive backlog of puzzles, including many suited to beginners: in fact, the main method by which I improved was working through the puzzles found there. There are a few tutorials ther...

Re: WPF Puzzle GP 2020

Very nice puzzle Sam! Amusingly enough, I'd experimented with the same set-up as you, so I found the break-in very quickly, but it still took me ages to solve... Finish was cute.
Also, you're absolutely right about my puzzle being unique: I must have missed something blindingly obvious. Oops!

Re: WPF Puzzle GP 2020

EDIT: this puzzle is wrong, because I misread the instructions for the puzzle. I'll try to correct it as quickly as possible. Are you sure? Looks good to me... The puzzle is mostly fine, there is just one small problem. I missed the 'at least' in 'A cell with a circled number does not attack, but m...

Re: WPF Puzzle GP 2020

You're not the only one Sam... I didn't participate in that round (I hadn't discovered the puzzle GP yet!) but when I tried it, I found it equally difficult. Although I am still quite slow at infection puzzles, there are a few tips I can offer: -Diagonal adjacencies are powerful. Use them fully! -Th...

Preliminary results for round 2: 13. Neil Zussman 605 29. James McGowan 508 34. Freddie Hand 495 Slightly disappointed not to have done the first puzzle: like Adam, I assumed the pattern would be slightly hidden (being a 25-point puzzle) so skipped it, but it turned out to just be a cubic sequence (...

The IB for round 2 (with points) can be found here: https://gp.worldpuzzle.org/sites/default/files/Puzzles/2020/2020_PuzzleRound2_IB_v01.pdf. Re: Puzzle Ramayan - 2020

One technique I used quite a lot was summing horizontally and vertically to find the value of a cell (as in, taking the sum of all horizontal clues covering a region and comparing to the sum of all vertical clues in the same region). This technique can also be helpful to find the sum of two squares ...

Preliminary results for round 1: 11. Neil Zussman 619 27. James McGowan 493 76. WPF Puzzle GP 2020

The first round of the 2020 Puzzle GP starts this weekend. The instructions booklet can be found here: https://gp.worldpuzzle.org/content/instruction-booklet-2. Overall, this seems to be a pretty good mix of puzzles. A bit disappointed however to see a 97-point hideout fences: I disliked the genre a...

Re: Different Neighbours

Thanks both! I've never tried starting a puzzle in pen and then switching to pencil due to fear of making a mistake (which happens frequently when I am going for speed). However, I have thought about using, say, a 4H pencil (hard) and then switching to a 4B pencil (soft) for guessing. That way, when...

Different Neighbours

Whenever I solve a different neighbours puzzle, I tend to painstakingly pencilmark numbers until I get somewhere. This normally allows me to solve the puzzle eventually, but it is not quick. Is there a trick (or multiple!) to solving this kind of puzzle more quickly? Also, there is clearly a lot of ...

Re: Yajilin&Variations - 30.08.-2.09.19

Now that the contest has finished, I suppose I can make a few comments about individual puzzles now. I noticed something about puzzle 20 (the second outside yajilin) while solving after-hours. If you simply ignore the 1 on the top row of clues, you can resolve the 3's either way and the answer key w...
