Different Neighbours

Whenever I solve a different neighbours puzzle, I tend to painstakingly pencilmark numbers until I get somewhere. This normally allows me to solve the puzzle eventually, but it is not quick. Is there a trick (or multiple!) to solving this kind of puzzle more quickly? Also, there is clearly a lot of ...

Re: Yajilin&Variations - 30.08.-2.09.19

Now that the contest has finished, I suppose I can make a few comments about individual puzzles now. I noticed something about puzzle 20 (the second outside yajilin) while solving after-hours. If you simply ignore the 1 on the top row of clues, you can resolve the 3's either way and the answer key w...

Re: Yajilin&Variations - 30.08.-2.09.19

Apologies: I have now removed it. I didn't think it would give others an unfair advantage but I understand you not wanting any information to leak out before the contest ends.

Re: Yajilin&Variations - 30.08.-2.09.19

This was a very enjoyable set of puzzles to solve!

There is a mistake on the submission page - both puzzle 6 and puzzle 7 are displayed as Yajilin #6. I only noticed after the contest but it would be good to fix it as it might otherwise cause some confusion.

Re: 2019 USPC

Our beloved Simon Anthony (on Cracking the Cryptic) has posted a video on the USPC star battle. I would strongly recommend anyone who bifurcated in the competition to watch it: the logic is really rather pretty. Simon does bifurcate near the end of the solve, but he could simply have looked at colum...

Re: 2019 USPC

Well done Tom for being the highest placed UK solver! I would have liked to vie for the title myself, but unfortunately I could only be there for an hour and a half. Still, I did manage to break multiple puzzles; on the Kropki Loop, I first tried solving without knowing the rule that the loop had to...

Re: WPF Sudoku GP

Many congratulations to Sam for the excellent result! I agree that the symmetric products sum was a good inclusion: I thought it shouldn't have been worth anywhere near 72 points, because as soon as you fill in the first 'box' the rest solves easily. Seeing a finned swordfish in a competitive scenar...

Re: 2019 USPC

Puzzle types appear to be more standard compared to previous years: a good thing in my opinion, although still too many letter placement puzzles for my liking. I see there have been a few new recruits from GMpuzzles, namely Ashish Kumar, Michael Tang and Grant Fikes. That should make the test more i...

Re: Arrows

Awesome notation James, thanks for sharing! Really helps to quickly visualise the logical steps.

Just for fun, I made a little arrows puzzle. Nothing too serious, but it does illustrate a configuration that could come up in some puzzles.

Re: Arrows

More generally, I have found that with a lot of arrows puzzles, there is a fairly narrow solving path at the start, with each deduction leading on to the next. Typically, after finishing the opening of the puzzle, you will only need simple arrows logic to finish off. To see the initial logic, it can...

Re: Arrows

I am also terrible at arrows puzzles, but I do have a couple tricks up my sleeve which can help me solve them. Firstly, the 'octagon rule' could come in handy for puzzles without all numbers given. This approximately says that for any regular-ish octagon (I am not sure of the exact statement because...

Re: UK Puzzle Championship 2019 / WPC Qualification

I know it's rather cheeky of me to ask, but could a full stop in an answer entry instead of a comma be excused?

I am fairly new here, so if this is the wrong place to ask, please direct me to the correct place!

Hi, On this type of error we do generally award points (occasionally partial).
