Re: Sudoku Classic

This is actually a flaw of the Sudoku Solver you are referring to: The step where it excludes the other four solution is critically based on the assumption that the solution is already unique. But since the assumption itself is wrong, the outcome is meaningless. Basically, any argument based on an i...

Re: Sudoku Classic

It doesn't matter if you write "best", "strongest" or whatever. The puzzle has five correct solutions, and you are simply wrong to assume that one of them is preferable to the others. Uniqueness can only come from an additional rule , but since you are not providing one to resolve the ambiguity, it ...

Re: 6th Skyscraper Puzzles Contest

Hello, the Skyscrapers Contest will start in a couple of hours. A few last-minute remarks: Please note that there is a time change this weekend. Incorrect solutions which are - based on my assessment - only due to typos will be corrected directly; in unclear cases I will inquire via email. (Please c...

Re: Daily Skyscrapers Puzzle

Hi there, thanks for your feedback. I find it counterproductive to release expected solving times before the actual solving; many solvers - including myself - adapt their solving strategies if they know what time to expect / to beat. Thus I am planning to publish the expert's times after each week o...

Re: Hausigel's Daily Puzzles

I rarely use any other browser but Firexox, but I visited a java applet forum and was led to believe that it should work on other browsers, too. Very sorry about the inconvenience!

Re: Daily Skyscrapers Puzzle

Hi, the test phase of the Daily Puzzle applet ends tomorrow; the DP officially starts on Monday (September 1st). In case you are not able to solve the puzzles on the respective day, they will remain available in PDF files (probably delayed by a couple of days). Furthermore, a weekly discussion of th...

Daily Skyscrapers Puzzle

Hi folks, there is a new section on my homepage which includes a Daily Puzzle which can be solved in an applet (follow the link near the bottom of the page linked below). I wrote the applet myself; it is not signed, so your browser might send you a warning which you have to override manually. If you...

Re: 2014 WPF Puzzle Grand Prix

Hi there, I worked hard to make sure that the "No Four in a Row" puzzle wasn't just an exercise in searching for three identical symbols in a row. Many puzzles of this type include only this kind of step; let us call it a "one-stage" reasoning. The intended solving path for the contest puzzle contai...

Re: Hausigel Contest Series

Looks interesting. To clarify, the Rallye mode means that the total time begins on 24/12 for everyone (not when we click the Start button), and also we can (re)submit answers without penalty and see our current score on the Ergebnistabelle. Is that correct? Pretty much. You should not view it a con...

Re: Hausigel Contest Series

Hello, I have set up another contest on the LM initial page, "Dream within a Dream". The contest takes place in "Rallye" mode, which means that there will not be a short time window for solving the puzzles; the contest will run over a year in total. Since I designed the puzzles at the same time as t...

Re: Hausigel Contest Series

Hi James, many thanks in return. Yes, the design occupied me for quite a while; in particular, I needed three days just to draw the Escher mazes. I guess I should have invested another 30 minutes to check the uniqueness of the solutions. (Although I agree that multiple solutions in mazes are not alw...

Re: Hausigel Contest Series

Hello,
another short remark: Since some of the mazes are very large, the pages 6-18 of the contest file contain only the puzzle diagrams; the instructions can be found on the pages 1-5. Please note furthermore that the second Escher maze (puzzle 8) has been rotated by 90° to fit on the page.
