Record results for UK teams at the World Championships

In the World Sudoku Championship (WSC), the UK team finished in 6th place, tying for their best ever performance. Team: David McNeill, Tom Collyer, Mark Goodliffe and Heather Golding. Further congratulations to David and Mark who were the top two competitors respectively in the 'over 50' category. I...

Re: Best wishes for the World Championships

Very creditable performance from UK A and B teams. Well done all! The A team finished 6th, and the B team finished with a higher score than many other A teams, not to mention ending up ahead of USA-B. We don't leave empty handed though. David and Mark claimed 1st and 2nd place respectively in the ov...

Re: World Championships 2017- Updates

Thanks Berni.

So, the UK is in 6th place (of 23) after WSC day 1. David and Tom are in the top 30, with Mark and Heather (and Neil, from the B team) not too far behind...

Re: World Championships 2017- Updates

Thank-you Neil.

I'd forgotten how little information flows out during the tournaments.
There's no partial results posted on the official site yet... http://wspc2017.logicmastersindia.com/?g=WSC2017

Some truly awful jigsaw puzzle implementations here.

Not perfect, but by far the best I've ever come across is https://www.jigidi.com/

Best wishes for the World Championships

To all the competitors, organisers and guests of the 2017 WSC and WPC in Bangalore: I'd like to wish you all a safe journey, and hope you all have a very enjoyable time in India this week. Special wishes of good fortune to the British teams of course, and to all those making their debut performances...

Re: Board sofware update

Thanks James. That's fixed.
Anywhere that accesses php '$_' variables (GET/POST/REQUEST/etc) are now throwing errors since the server upgrade.

I need to systematically go through all scripts replacing all references. In the meantime, report here anything that can't wait. Ta.

Re: Board sofware update

I've restored clicking the logo as a return link to the main website. As you say, not a perfect solution. There doesn't appear to be any other standard configuration to modify the header banner. However, it is possible to fully customise the header banner by getting stuck into the /prosilver/templat...

Board sofware update

I'd been putting this off for some time, but was forced into action yesterday when our hosts upgraded their PHP version to 7.0x, which was not supported by the current version of phpBB. Anyway, as you can see, the forum is working, as is most(?) of the rest of the website. I'm aware of a couple of p...

Well done Tom, and everyone else who made (or should have made) the final! Nice write-up too.

I hope that some of the unrecognised names you mention become familiar faces in these quarters over the next few years.

Re: Bot registrations

The bot filtering seems to be working. We've not had a rogue account activated in a long time. However, we have had lots of attempted registration, which I just need to clear out. (c.20-30 per day!) Anyway, I've upped the game, using the API available at https://stopforumspam.com/usage Since doing t...

Welcome Angus! (I can't help but sense some Scottish connections in your name...) I hope you enjoy what you find here. My advice is...

Re: Puzzle GP question

Re round 8, I only did 'C', which (by the way) you guys really shouldn't overlook... I can't remember the last time I made so many mistakes in one competition - 4/19 answers with an error! However, the contest was heavily loaded on the last 2 puzzles. I would have scored more by simply solving those...

Coincidentally, I've solved a lot of clouds puzzles recently. I have an app called 'logic games' on my phone (logo is 2 grey cogs). "Free on iOS, Android and WP" by Andrea Sabbatini. There are dozens of familiar puzzle types you can practice, including Clouds... Anyway, that doesn't help if you don'...

Puzzle GP round 7

On this weekend, but you should have had an email if you've competed in any previous round... (here)

Anyway, booklet C, "C16-17 Uncounted Skyscrapers". Anyone got any ideas how to solve these?

Re: Play-offs

I once asked Ulrich what he thought of the playoffs. He said he didn't mind - At least it gave someone else a chance to be champion. Seriously though, 2-3 days of puzzling should clearly indicate who is 'best' overall, and the 'playoffs' make a bit of a mockery of the whole event. It might be justif...

Re: New Zealand puzzle team

As I said in a speech once (if anyone was listening), most people do not attend the WPC with any expectation of winning. They attend because it is a gathering of like-minded people, and is a very enjoyable experience. Anyone who has been to a WPC will testify this. (Not sure if the WSC is in the sam...
