Re: Hello all

Thanks, Angus. Fascinating.

Perhaps see you in Bangalore, though I depart quickly once the Sudoku is over!

Re: Hello all

Welcome, Angus. Congratulations on winning the GCHQ Puzzle Book challenge. I would be fascinated to know (a) what size your final Wordbox was? and (b) How did you compile it? (Actually, I'd love to see the Wordbox itself). Having worked our way through the puzzles, Simon & I decided the only sensibl...

Re: UK Sudoku Championship 2017 / WSC Qualification

Thanks for organising, Tom. A good set of puzzles, I felt, though it probably helped me that there was a bias towards what I think of as the older variants.

Re: 2017 Sudoku GP

Disappointed not to see an official score for you Tom. Also even more disappointed to transpose 2 digits (and their counterparts) in a 66-pt puzzle that had taken me a long time to complete. Otherwise that would have been 2 rounds in a row with just one puzzle ignored.

Re: 2017 Sudoku GP

Thanks! I was quite surprised, after finishing a difficult puzzle with 1:30 to go, to find that I'd done all except the Fortress (which I was avoiding). It was weird that it didn't FEEL a much better performance than the previous round where I did relatively poorly. But I was glad, having fallen 79 ...

Re: 2017 Sudoku GP

Damn. Conceding 100 points to Heather, having just caught her in the last round, was not the plan. I even thought the round had gone OK, but making some sort of mistake on the highest-value classic clearly didn't help. A very fair round, I thought.

Re: Trinity College Cambridge online puzzle hunt next week

Thanks for posting, Chris. Had a go with a couple of chums from DASH and it was fun. Some of the puzzles (basically one each day) were extremely hard. And the hints pretty random about whether they were helpful. I'd love to know whether the four teams that finished ahead of us were sweating it out t...

Re: WPF Sudoku GP 2016

Well done, Heather, and Sam. I didn't realise how badly I was doing. I shall put it down to the hard puzzles being pretty vicious this time, though it clearly didn't help that I forgot to enter puzzle 1 which I had solved before beginning the tougher ones.

Re: WPF Sudoku GP 2016

Ouch! Awful one for me. Even if I had finished the 71-pointer that I spent so much time on, I wouldn't have caught Heather. Well done Heather, and David ... and indeed Mike.

Re: WPF Puzzle GP 2016

Ah well. If the Casual result hadn't looked so good to me, I suspect I might be wondering if it wasn't an unnecessary complication to have the two competitions ... And unlike Alan I have no trouble believing that James nipped into the Casual competition for 5 minutes and solved 5 puzzles or whatever...

Re: WPF Puzzle GP 2016

Congrats to the big hitters again, and especially James for coming 2nd in Round 1 of the GP. Brilliant performance. Neil was Top 20 too.

But also well done to Adam Bissett, for being the only person to pip me in the Casual competition - and clearly a great decision (Tom?) to introduce that format!

Re: WPF Puzzle GP 2016

In 1 the gaps between the numbers were increasing arithmetically (2, 8, 16, 26, 38, 52 increase by 6, 8, 10, 12, 14). Answer: 91 In 2 the gaps between the numbers increase by 8 (14, 22, 30, 38). Answer: 42 In 3 the numbers to West and East of the circle form a 2-digit number, which, divided by the 2...

Re: WPF Sudoku GP 2016

Round 1 seemed like a tough test to me. Impressive to get 458 scoring solvers, but the UK's efforts had a bit of a wan look; I guess that will always be the case if Tom is ruled out for organising, David for testing and Neil a no-show. Perhaps a shame to have the Mahabharat timing clash - I was quit...

Re: LMI - Sudoku Mahabharat & ISC Qualifiers

Well done to Tom and especially David on the Outside round. I have to say that I detest (i.e. am appalling at) all types of Skyscrapers puzzles, and rather than spending 20+ minutes making progress and eventually reaching a contradiction in the big one, I would have done better to clean up all the s...

Re: LMI - Sudoku Mahabharat & ISC Qualifiers

David, I'm not fit to clean your virtual boots let alone disagree with you. However: the big Group Sums certainly can solve by logic all the way through - I acknowledge that at about the 60% point, it might be quicker to bifurcate to the solution; Repeating Neighbours was from an earlier contest - y...

Re: LMI - Sudoku Mahabharat & ISC Qualifiers

Yes, well done, David McN. Sincerely delighted at your performance, even in the part that deprives me of a prize! Well done all the UK competitors too, a solid team effort all round (excepting my start in the first WSC team round, that is ... cough, cough ... blush). Talking of the subscription fee,...

Re: LMI - Sudoku Mahabharat & ISC Qualifiers

Thanks, Prasanna, In fact I got all the steps mentioned in the walkthrough - in the end. It's just that proving the theoretical equality of such cells took me quite some time; and then having finally proved (I thought) all of those equivalences, I still struggled to complete the puzzle, and managed ...

Yes well done, Tom. I felt the formbook was followed apart from Heather's problem with one of the puzzles in the preliminary. Congrats to David and Mike for making the final. There was a surprising amount of errors made in the final - some years there are next to none, in others there are few all-co...

Re: UK Sudoku Championship 2015

Good grief, that is a virtual dead heat for second. I was going to commiserate with Neil and Michael, but as David poignantly points out, there are others who were within one puzzle of that place. But as he also says, very well done Heather! My guess is you didn't waste any time on the vicious Kille...
