[SOTR] End of year events

Hello UKPA, Currently I'm running the traditional Nikoli Hurdles 5 (its been 5 years already?!). Same format. 8 puzzles to be solved in order, where the answer to one puzzle unlocks the next puzzle. This year I have introduced a somewhat controversial game at the finish line. Normally I use a luck-b...

Re: New Zealand puzzle team

As a potential future team-NZ member, my initial excitement was washed away when I read what they're actually about. I see a group of non-necessarily-puzzle-solving friends, starting a "company" just to earn the rights to represent NZ at WSC/WPC. I'd be surprised if they've solved anything beyond Su...

Re: 24 Hour Puzzle Championship

Prasanna won't be arriving until late Friday afternoon.
I don't have contacts with other people, so maybe someone can ask around?

Re: 24 Hour Puzzle Championship

See you guys in Budapest this year!
I'm arriving on Thursday evening (if nothing goes wrong).
Maybe some escape rooms on Friday and/or sightseeing/puzzle talk on Thursday?
:P :P

Re: 24 Hour Puzzle Championship

There's a chance of me being able to go this year.
Is anyone interested in those Hungarian escape rooms on Friday?
If there's a group going I hope to tag along and book my flights accordingly.
Hopefully, they have different rooms set up by now.

[SOTR] PuzzleDo

Hello UKPA! This month I’m running “PuzzleDo”. It is based on the board game Cluedo. There are 9 puzzles to be solved. Each will unlock a clue to a final Whodunnit-style puzzle. (If you’re already familiar with Cluedo, great!, less reading for you.) This event is different to what I usually do. It i...

[SOTR] 2016 Holiday Quiz

Merry Christmas UKPA! I'm running a puzzle-related quiz over at SOTR. The highest scorer will win Toteoki Specially Selected Fillomino published by Nikoli. You don't have to answer all the questions. The maximum score is 60 and last year's winning score was 58/60. :!: I'm guessing a lower-winning sc...

Re: [SOTR] Nikoli Hurdles 4

Hello,
Hope you all had a great time in Slovakia the past week.
This will be my last reminder for Nikoli Hurdles 4 - there's about 4 days left to reach the finish.

Always good to see UKPA friends right in there ;)

See you next time!

Re: [SOTR] Nikoli Hurdles 4

Thanks for the kind words guys. As with previous events, the novelties were met with either 'it was my favourite!" or "I hope to never see it again". Couldn't tell whether I did the right thing or not. Maybe the timing wasn't good since the WPC/WSC is happening in a couple of weeks. But if you haven...

[SOTR] Nikoli Hurdles 4

Hello UKPA! It's been a while... Most of you are already familiar with events at SOTR and it has been a quiet year. Nikoli Hurdles 4 has just begun and entries are open until 29th October. Same rules. 8 puzzles to be solved successively. Do mind the answer keys, though. This set of hurdles feature u...

Re: WPF Puzzle GP 2016

If I want a friend-nemy to not sleep well I'm going to make sure to give him a nxn Kropki where n is >10    At the moment, I feel the concept of splitting casual/competitive is failing. Wei-Hwa posted some really fun examples of non-puzzle-people-friendly, non-WPC-style, r...

[SOTR] Christmas Quiz

Merry Christmas UKPA! I made a puzzle-related quiz over at SOTR. You can start submitting entries from today (Christmas) until Wednesday 6th January. The quiz is everything about puzzles in general, the WPC/WSC, puzzle people, sites, puzzle names, types etc etc. I purposely made sure no one gets ful...

Re: [SOTR] Nikoli Hurdles 3

Thank you for the feedback guys. My inbox is flooded with "what were you thinking!?" regarding the controversial decision to include puzzle 8 in the set. I was inspired by the early issues of Nikoli Puzzle the Giants where that said puzzle appeared in its most monstrous form. Something like 15x10 (p...

[SOTR] Nikoli Hurdles 3

Hello UKPA, The third edition of Nikoli Hurdles started a few days ago. Same format as previous ones with 8 puzzles to be solved chronologically. One winner will receive the recently-published Nikoli Penpa 2016 as an early Christmas present. There's over 2 weeks left in this contest so if this is so...

Re: 2015 USPC and Sudoku Team Qualifying Test

Wow. that was fun!
I think I might have a few points slashed away from the very nitpicky answer keys.
But this is still one of my favourite puzzle tests lately.

How did everyone do?

Nicely done!
Looks like we'll be seeing several of Nikola's practice material for 24HPC ;)
Looking forward to the puzzles.
Also the Tapa example is incorrectly credited to me, it is Serkan's.

[SOTR] - Manila

Hello UKPA! I have another contest going on at SOTR. It is based on a boardgame called "Manila". There are 9 puzzles to solve, all logic with the exception of one wordfind. According to several entrants; this is the hardest event to date. :? There are three prizes up for grabs. Winners will receive ...

Re: 2015 Puzzle GP

Just finished Round 3's Puzzle GP. I have to say the round had just became one of my all-time favourites. Great format, great variety and all-round nice puzzles. The 6-puzzles-of-each-type gimmick was brilliantly executed. Easy puzzles weren't too obvious and the hard puzzles were very fair and didn...

Re: Puzzle Marathon 2015 - LMI

How is the marathon going for everyone? With a few puzzles left, I can't see what's been said in the LMI forums yet. But so far, I'm already battered. Personally, I find a couple of these puzzles a little too guess-y to be fun. Maybe it is just the marathon format. But, ugh, there's at least one puz...

We annihilated the existing record of 38 minutes with our time of 27 minutes! The puzzles weren...

[SOTR] Sudoku Excavation

Hello UKPA, I would like to invite all keen sudoku solvers to "Sudoku Excavation". Briefly, there are 15 sudoku puzzles to solve and you use their answers to dig a field for fossil pieces. When you have collected all the pieces, they combine to make one final puzzle. Solve that final puzzle to be in...
