Re: What is a sudoku? My answer.
There are situations where you HAVE to judge if a puzzle is a sudoku or not: if you are an author for a sudoku competition or the responsible of puzzle selection for sudoku competition. Then I think you can't avoid the question. How in practice do you do when you're in such situations? How do you j...

Re: What is a sudoku? My answer.
I'm happy that you change your mind about the fact that it is possible to define what is a sudoku. This is probably a misunderstanding. In the post Three different questions? I talked about a definition of sudoku variations not about the definition of the puzzle type sudoku. In the last case it's j...

What is a sudoku? My answer.
Having a little time to think about the original question I found the following answer. For me a sudoku consist of a grid of n times n cells, which is dissected into n regions of size n . Some cells may contain a number and the goal is to fill a single number into each cell, such that in every row, ...

Re: Qualification for the German Sudoku Championship
The contest has finished. Concratulations to Tantan, Tiit und Seungjae. Unfortunately the Little-Killer had two solutions, which was due to the fact, that the hints at the right border were missing. Luckily, the solution code of both solutions was the same and the intended solving path wasn't broken...

Re: Three different questions?
Ignoring the fact, that I'd not demand distinct symbols, I can go along with 2.[123] and 3.1. But I think you do in 1.1 through 1.5 a huge effort to avoid bare latin squares. Is this really necessary?

3D-Sudoku (German Sudoku Championship 2006)
Rules: Place numbers 1 to 16 in the cells. All numbers in all plaines (in all three directions) have to be different.
Published with permission from Heines Rätselbibliothek.
Possible objections: It's 3D, instead of areas a 3rd dimension is added.

Re: Three different questions?
Why do you say it's not wishable to give clear border? [...] no repeated digits, no blank cells in solution, regions of size N where N is the number of distinct symblos to be placed, etc... [...] I first of all I said, it's not possible. But if you think it is, can you just define it, like you thin...

Three different questions?
In my oppinion, we've got at least three different questions here. I would be happy, if we could segregate them a little: Which variation is considered a valid sudoku variation? (Killer is, Latin Square or Starbattle is not, but where are the borders...) How do we cope with difficult solving techniq...

Re: Very Hard Classic Sudoku [WSC 2010]
From that point of view, a round of harder classics coukd bsaid to be in some sense fairer as the luck, should, on average, balance itself out. Not that on average guarantees everything. It is still possible (although less likely) for an individual solver to have a run of lucky (or unlucky) guesses...

Re: Very Hard Classic Sudoku [WSC 2010]
In some of the posts so far, you mix "guessing" with "trail and error". I think, we should clearly distinguish between these two, because they are two different solving techniques, both feasable in some situations. To clearify: Guessing means, that one puts a more or less random ...

Re: Zigzag Sudoku [WSC 2007]
It's hard for me, to vote here: I think it's perfectly fine to have a sudoku with two solutions when this is known beforehand and both solutions are to be found. For me this is a "unique" solution (The two solutions of the sudoku form one solution of the whole puzzle). As far as I remember...

Re: Very Hard Classic Sudoku [WSC 2010]
In my oppinion, someone who claims to be a sudoku champion should be able to solve all 9x9 standard sudokus, even with quite difficult logic.

Re: Record results for UK teams at the World Championships
Coincidentally, we are (I believe) the highest ranked team in either contest that has no sponsor. I never heard of any sponsor for the german team... (Well actually in ancient times - before 2006 - we had one.) and again in Slovakia next year. You mean Chech, don't you?!? Or has there been a change?

Yes, I think I understand. Instead of fixed logistic curves defined by a fixed parameter of 2, this exponent was variable. Do you know to what extent this value varied away from 2 before your change? It was in between 1.69 and 2.38. Distribution: 5x 1.7, 72x 1.8, 286x 1.9, 817x 2.0, 536x 2.1, 221x ...

I have just been sent an e-mail congratulating me on becoming a second Dan. Second Dan used to be for a long-term average of over 2200 and I'm nowhere near that. Have the rules changed? Well, the rules have changed - I removed some part of the formula which proved to press the rating down over time...

It's impressive in a way if the bots can beat the registration checks, but I've also heard stories of so-called click farms where people who are paid (pennies) to set up accounts, amongst other things In the german forum , we use a hack, were the people are asked to ignore the captcha and write 'lo...
