Re: Record results for UK teams at the World Championships

Coincidentally, we are (I believe) the highest ranked team in either contest that has no sponsor. I never heard of any sponsor for the german team... (Well actually in ancient times - before 2006 - we had one.) and again in Slovakia next year. You mean Chech, don't you?!? Or has there been a change?

Re: croco-puzzle

Yes, I think I understand. Instead of fixed logistic curves defined by a fixed parameter of 2, this exponent was variable. Do you know to what extent this value varied away from 2 before your change? It was in between 1.69 and 2.38. Distribution: 5x 1.7, 72x 1.8, 286x 1.9, 817x 2.0, 536x 2.1, 221x ...

Re: croco-puzzle

Is it possible for you to explain a little more about the formula Berni? This kind of thing does interest me a lot. Well the formular with an explanation (in german though) can be found at Rating description . In the formula "dauer" is "duration", "min" is the fastest and "med" is the median of all...

Re: croco-puzzle

I have just been sent an e-mail congratulating me on becoming a second Dan. Second Dan used to be for a long-term average of over 2200 and I'm nowhere near that. Have the rules changed? Well, the rules have changed - I removed some part of the formula which proved to press the rating down over time...

Re: Bot registrations

It's impressive in a way if the bots can beat the registration checks, but I've also heard stories of so-called click farms where people who are paid (pennies) to set up accounts, amongst other things In the german forum , we use a hack, were the people are asked to ignore the captcha and write 'lo...

Re: Comparing the difficulty of the UKPC from year to year

6 years ago I recall there being other contests of this length, now I think there's only the USPC (which I don't enter), and even 2 hours is rare. The GPs and LMI tend to use 1.5 hours. Just a note: The german qualification round (which is held online and open) is always 2.5 hours. But this might b...

Re: English name?

I've tried some internet searches with the names you gave. "word fit" seems to be the most common. Wikipedia forwards kriss-kross to "fill in" or "word fills" - might be more common in USA than in UK? Anyway, thank you, for your quick responses!

Re: Narrow cave or tight cave?

I think when this issue first cropped up, "Corridors" was suggested for the narrow cave variant, and that still seems good (though not a direct translation of the German). Yes, indeed, "corridors" sounds good. (But I think, I can remember a different puzzle with that name.) Anyway, meanwhile I've d...

Re: Narrow cave or tight cave?

I'd suggest 'narrow cave' from those choices. That was my first instinct too, but well instinct is sometimes missleading in a foreign language. I also prefere narrow over tight, because the later might cause confusion with tight-fit-puzzles. (Sidenote: Can one imagine a tight-fit-cave?!?) Thanks fo...

Narrow cave or tight cave?

As you may have noticed, the cave (Höhle) applet on CrocoPuzzle has slightly different rules compared to international standard. The difference is, that international 2x2 areas inside the cave are allowed while it is forbidden on CP. To address this issue I'd like to rename the puzzle type on CP. In...

Re: croco-puzzle

I went ahead and patiently typed them into google translate. I hope you'll never need to do that again, because in a few days the Ü-Rätsel will switch from java applets zu javascript applets. The later ones do provide the interface and instructions in english (thanks to Lasse for translating). You ...

Re: Account Deletion?

In the german forum, we had this problem with spammers too. Captchas didn't work, as the bots were able to read them. So we asked the user to ignore the captcha and type a given word instead. That worked great. An alternative would be to give a 4x4-sudoku and ask the person to solve it and enter the...

I'd like to point you to my Abstract Adventure , where one of the goals of the design was to create an almost completely language independent adventure. Ideed there are only three places where you can find language: First, the title, which is the german version of "Abstract Adventure". Second, a not...

There is only one popup and it is for the Google sign-in as detailed above.

I can't find anything wrong with my solution, and nobody has officially solved it yet (only up for about an hour, but even for a fairly tricky puzzle I'd expect a handful by now).
Key is fixed. Sorry.
